My 11 week old baby has had a watery eye for about 2 days now. It dosent seem to bug her - its just watery. Now her second eye (while not as bad) is a bit watery too and she has started coughing. The coughing is only once an hour - at maybe 2 coughs at most. They don't sound mucusy, raspy or anything - just like a regular slight cough. She is still eating fine, smiling, sleeping fine and her face isn't red or any odd colour (her eyebrows go red if shes tired though but that's normal). Her poops and wet diapers are all normal too.

I called Health Link (telephone service to talk to a nurse) and she told me that babies can just develop a cough but if it becomes consistent (coughing all the time) or lasts more than 10 days to go in to the doctor. I googled the watery eye - and it stated the tear ducts are still developing and this can happen.

Any advice? I checked up her nose (just by looking) and nothing is clogged there was just a little snot.

Oh just to add:

She also drools much more and stuffs her hand in her mouth. My mum thought she may be teething especially with the symptoms but I thought it was too early for that??

It could be a seasonal allergy maybe?

Their salivary glands do start to kick in around 8 weeks I believe and they do start to dribble more. The coughing and slight congestion of the nose could definitely be attributed to this - they don't yet know how to swallow all the drool, and it gets all over the place - down their throat, up their nasal passages ...

It's definitely not too early for teething though I'm afraid! Mine started teething at about 12 weeks - full on biting, white bulging gums, dribbling misery ... it came and went, one week on, one week off, until she got her first tooth at 5 months. Even now she teethes for 2-3 months before any sort of tooth shows up. We've been working on four molars since May and they've only just started to poke through the gums!

Thanks! That's interesting to know about the drool. I have a feeling it may be allergies - my hubby gets seasonal allergies BAD. She may have taken after him.

Its slowly clearing up, which is nice. I checked her gums and they also look a little white so im not sure if we are teething yet. So many questions! lol.

Haha, it can come and go. Mine's gums used to go really white - you could see the teeth bulging right out and I'd be thinking 'This is it', but then it would stop again! Poor little bugger was SO miserable!
