Hi I was wondering if anyone could help. I've been advised that I am not to put my baby on to hungry baby milk. Something to do with it causing constipation and he's currently on lactulose due to surgery at 10 days old. Well at the moment he's currently drinking around 35-40 oz a day on average. And was sleeping through the night. He's now started waking around 4 for a night feed. So now he's on 40-46 ounces a day.

Is it too early for me to start weaning him. Im currently going through a tin of milk in less than a week :( xxx

Yes that's much too early. It's best to wait till 6 months.

It sounds like he's going through a growth spurt, there's quite a big one at around 12 weeks/3months followed by another one at around 4 months, sometimes the two growth spurts run into each other so it seems like he's never satisfied, but it does pass. Just keep giving him the milk, he needs it more than solids, milk contains more nutrients and calories than solids. You'd just be filling him up on empty calories and he'd be missing out on vital nutrients he needs to grow and develop. Plus he probably still has the tongue thrust reflex which protects him from swallowing solids before he's ready. Waking through the night isn't a sign of needing food and there's no proven evidence to show that solids help babies sttn, their sleep patterns change all the time and it's completely normal.

Hang in there, it will pass.

I best stock up on his milk then lol.
He just constantly seems to be hungry. I honesty don't know where he puts it. He's even having a few 9oz feeds usually its a 6 oz feed now its 9 oz as well.

I think I read somewhere that during a growth spurt their digestive tract speeds up to accommodate for the need for extra milk. Don't quote me on that but It would explain how they're able to take so much milk during these times :)

I know this might be irrelevant to you but are you FF if so have you changed to the next size teat yet? I am thinking this may be an issue now..

I'm not I'm breastfeeding, but it may be worth changing to the next size, see if that helps?

I'm not sure teat size has anything to do with it tbh. My dd went through this as well. Sometimes she would require a 10 oz over her general six ounce. It does slow down. My daughter is 7 months now and really doesn't want her bottles anymore so she reluctantly drinks them.

He's hard to keep up with at the moment his feeds are every 2-3 hours 7oz at a time the once in a night is now 2-3 time in the night. I bought variflow twats with no success. The milk just doesn't seem to be satisfying him at all. :( xx

Honestly it sounds like a growth spurt, milk is definitely the best thing you can give him right now. 2-3 hours doesn't sound like that much to me but then again my lo is breastfed and rarely goes longer than 3 hours lol.

I had a nurse to tell me my dd should be eating every 3 to 4 hours and got scolded for overfeeding her b/c she wanted to eat every two. I kid you not...I still laugh about that one.

Your 12 week old slept through the night? Ah, bliss!!! My son didnt sleep through til he was around 8 months old!

Milk is all they need til 6 months so just give them what they want:flower:

Bloody hell what should we do starve them then? I've tried him with water and everything doesn't work he screams cause it's not milk!! Xx

I told her she was an idiot that she should try to come deal with this starving screaming baby then.

I don't think they realise what it's like as most of them don't have children. My HV is a nightmare. And she has children. She turned up an hour late to the hospital when I waited around and then rang to see where I was. I'd literally popped out 2 minutes before she arrived after being there all day.

I just hope she never has a child that has to spend the first 2 weeks in intensive care.

How soon did you wean your daughter and son? Xx

If your LO is still mostly having 6oz bottles it sounds like milk is satisfying enough still and that it's just a growth spurt. I weaned at 23 weeks, we really held out, he was having 9oz at every feed, crying for more and hungry baby milk made no difference. Milk just wasn't doing it for him anymore

I know it's stressful and tiring but I'm so glad I hung in there til he was much closer to 6 months. :flower: x

My son was 4 months, my daughter was ready until 5.5 months. I follow my pediatrician's guidelines of start trying at four months and slowly introduce things.

My lo is 7.5 weeks and drinking 8oz hungry baby formula every 4hrs we was holding off switching his formula as long as possible but we've done it now as he dropped to 3hrly feeds. We only switched his milk a day ago after giving him a bed time bottle of hungry baby.. He started sttn 2 nights before we started the hungry baby milk.
I was told not to use hungry milk yet but I thought it was worth a try as we can slways swap back He's taken really well to it and its the best for us. Do what works Hun. Could you try the cartons to see if it makes him constipated before buying a tub?

We swapped his teats at 4 weeks to the 3m + ones as he was getting lazy and would only drink 3/4oz
The variflow ones made him sick as he guzzled too much lol

He can't have hungry baby due to having surgery unfortunately that's come from his nurse too as well as HV xx

Aw bless him. We're on our first whole day of hungry milk tomorrow. Hope he takes well to it! He eats too much! Don't know how I'm gonna hold off weaning til 6m with his milk consumption I'm gonna need bigger bottles!!

Well I spoke to the Nurse about weaning and she said weaning max would be better for him than giving him ungry baby milk x
