Aisling was 8lb 15oz when she was born and is now 12lb 6oz. I had her weighed today and she's only put on 1oz in the last 2 weeks?? The health visitor said that we'd see how things were when she was weighed next but that some women produce breast milk with less calories than others and that might be the case with me as Aisling doesn't seem hungry and is sleeping through the night. Thing is, she was gaining really well up until now.

The HV immediately suggested I give her a bottle of formula for the last feed of the day to get the calories in her and it was only when I said I'd prefer not to if possible that she said we'd wait til she was weighed next... I don't want to put breast feeding before Aisling's health but I also don't want to give in to a formula feed too easily either.

Has anyone else seen a really small gain like this for it to then go back to normal?

my little girl was 8lb 4oz when she was born and at 17 weeks or thereabouts we had a similar situation where she went from 12lb12oz to 12lb13oz in 17 days, my hv's comment was as long as she was gaining not to worry. I put myself through the mill though and my confidence really dropped, i did however take more care of myself and my diet and made sure Ellis took both breasts at every feed (i.e waking her up if she dozed off) 5 days later she'd gained 6oz and i haven't had her weighed since. Ellis is bright, happy and very content and i've decided to trust that rather than what the scales say-although thats an entirely personal choice! She feels like she weighs a ton when she wants held standing and thats good enough for me!!
Good luck x

I have - even a loss once. :) Just wait a while. I'm sure these HVs are in the bloody pockets of the formula manufacturers!!!

You milk has more calaries in it tha formula. So much can influence her weight on the scale. What if her scale was not calabrated properly? Did she nurse before being weighed or have a big poo? It's been super hot, so maybe your LO wasn't so hungry this past week, or was burning more calories to keep cool. Don't let her scare you. As long as you are getting lots of dirty diapers, and your LO is happy and thriving, then you are doing great.

It's definitely knocked my confidence a bit :( Silly thing is, she's longer than she was 2 weeks ago because lots more of her babygros don't fit her now and she feels sturdier somehow but it's obviously not coming through in her weight for some reason.

We don't have the whole HV system here in the US, and to be honest, I don't get why you girls put up with it. I really only ever see you complain about them. I think while the idea is a great, the actual practice only causes problems.

If she is longer than that is a perfect explination, it takes lots of energy and calories to grow. When I was a kid, I would always pudge up, then grow taller and get skinny again. Brenn seems to be doing the same.

Lu, thats exactly how i felt. i was convinced Ellis had been piling it on because length wise she was definitely growing!! A paediatrician who saw Ellis (for an unrelated health issue) said that he had no concerns about her weight, in his experience bf babies get long first then fill out, she was alert and happy and had met her milestones, he said head growth is more relevant than weight gain as brain development/growth was the most important issue at this stage. Don't let this knock your confidence, if aisling is happy and content these are more accurate markers of how well she's doing, just make sure you're looking after yourself as i think that was the only thing i was guilty of!
Keep up the good work x

My lo has 1 formula bottle a day, before bed. Even with that the other week she only gained 2oz in 2 weeks and they have tried to get me to give her more bottles for months. The next week she gained 8oz but she has grown really long! Just don't be pushed into anything hun

I was just at a baby group where they had a weighing scales so I figured I'd get Aisling weighed again. She was 12lb 6oz on Tuesday and now, on Thursday, she's 12lb 14oz?! So after putting on 1oz in 2 weeks, now she's put on 8oz in 2 days?? How does that work? I'm wondering if she really put on that much or if one or other sets of scales were wrong. Either way, I'm much happier now! :happydance::D

Maybe the scales were wrong?

Alex has lost a few ozs in a week but has continued to gain since then :D

Sounds like the scales were wrong.

Bloody HVs!
