my lovely baby boy harry was born at 38+2 on 9th august at 9.31pm.
he is my 2nd baby and believe me, i am now going to start listening to my husband more as had i not, harry would have been born at home!
i started having very mild back pains on the morning of the 9th and they were coming roughly every 15 mins. They werent so painful i was moaning but they did stop me in my tracks. my husband decided not to go to work just incase, as i had my 2.5 year old at home also. the day went on and i was pretty sure this was probably very early labour as the pains were still coming. our eldest was going to my inlaws for the night anyway so we dropped him off as planned and my pains stepped up an awful lot. they were coming about every 8 mins and getting pretty painful. still i hadnt had a show and my waters hadnt broken so i didnt want to phone the delivery suite as i knew it would just be the 'take some paracetamol and have a bath' line! we went home and i was all set for a bath and to then watch the soaps - i really was convinced nothing was going to happen that day. the contractions started every 4 mins and my husband went into utter panic and insisted on phoning D/S. As i said they told me to have a bath etc and if it became unbearable to go in. I was still insisting it could be days yet but hubby pretty much demanded that we go to hospital - he was really panicking!
we got there at 7.30pm and to cut a long story short received appalling service which resulted in me being sent to an assessment room to wait. i was not seen by a midwife until 8.55pm. by this point i was crying with pain and each time by husband went to try and find someone he was ignored - i can only assume that as shifts change at 9pm no one wanted to take me on! anyway the night shift came and i got a lovely midwife and student looking after me. to my shock i was 7 cm when they did an internal! i couldnt believe it!
they left us for 10 mins whilst a delivery room was arranged and came back at 9.10pm. they started wheeling me out of the room when i felt the overwhelming urge to push and i just couldnt stop it. i screamed that i was pushing which resulted in them running down the corridor with me on a bed and hubby running behind with all the bags! they then found that i was fully dilated and babys head was almost there. my waters then burst allover the midwife and an awful lot of meconium came out. when harrys head came they found the cord was round him so things got a little panicked and the gas and air was taken from me. i was told to push him out now as he was distressed and the gas was not helping me. what happened then is a bit of a blur but i must have got my act together as harry arrived very soon after.
it was all very fast and im still shocked that hes here as hes not due til 21st august! but i wouldnt have had it any other way. i had a small tear and was home for lunchtime the next day. we are still quite upset at the initial treatment when we arrived and are considering a complaint, but the midwife who delivered him was brilliant and apologised for the behaviour of the day staff who didnt want to know.
thanks for reading!
