I had my 20.week scan today and everything is fine with my baby girl and she's growing perfectly. The sonographer told me that my placenta is quite low lying which isn't much of a concern to me because I had a low lying placenta with dd1 at 20 weeks, it was abutting o/s and by the time I was rescanned at 34 weeks it had moved..

However she said this time its a little worse as the tip of the placenta is covering the o/s and as she looked further to find the cord site to see if thaymt was low too, she said there was a contraction.. I asked her what this means but she didn't answer, she said there were no vessels in the wrong place and she just arranged for me to go back at 34 weeks again. Does anyone know what she meant by "there's a contraction"?

I've heard of some women having irritation to the cervix when the placenta is on the cervical os. Maybe the irritation gave you a contraction?

I'm not sure but I'd want to know if I was u, can u ring ur midwife and ask her?

I'm not sure about this Hun but I hope someone can help you out. Xx

She was a littlen concerned that my midwife hasn't scheduled to see me again until 25 weeks

I'd give your midwife a call Hun and let her know the situation and how your feeling about it xx

I had the same thing with Katie so I kind of know what to expect, although katies wasn't as bad as it was only abutting and not covering, I had a normal birth with Katie but I heamoraged at the start of my Labour because they don't think the placenta had moved quite enough, I didn't need a blood transfusion or anything but it was very stressful and had been in and out of hospital since 27 weeks with spotting and at 36 weeks I had a massive bleed and contractions until my waters broke at 38 weeks, so I'm kind of hoping they'll read my notes from her birth and decide it's safer to give me a section. X

You can request to chat with a consultant who will go over all your notes from your previous pregnancy and birth, I was going to do this as I had a terrible first birth with dd but I've decided I'm going to try my best for a natural experience this time. Certainly chat with your MW xx

Thanks hun, I'm going to give her a call tomorrow and see what she says, the sonographer did ask me if I was under consultant care this time, she seemed to suggest that the midwife might ask for me to be referred to a consultant x

At my ultrasound the baby was blocking the view of the os and my tech asked me to go and empty my bladder as this sometimes causes a contraction which can change what they are able to see on the ultrasound, in my case she hoped it should make things more clear. I bet the tech was just commenting that there was a contraction at the os when they were trying to visualize it and in your case it made what she was trying to get a picture of either easier or harder to see so she commented on not even considering that this might worry you. There are small contractions that happen normally all the time from what I understood. Still a good idea to ask the mw but likely not something to be concerned about. As for the placenta covering the os I think that would be considered a previa? In which case management of that is outside of the mw scope of practice so you would need to be referred to a consultant for it. Could still move though and mw may be able to manage you. That's my guess anyways.

Thank you, I did ask her if it was previa, she said not as it's only the tip of the placenta and she's quite certain it will move up. She said I didn't need to take it 'easy' or anything and can carry on as normal but just to be careful during intercourse. She asked if I'd had any bleeding, which I havent but with dd1 the bleeding didn't really start until 3rd tri, I'm guessing because she was head down and engaging so was probably irritating the placenta x
