My son is 21 month old and doesn't say one full word. He say ma for mum, ba for dad and ba for bye although is does sound like bye when he says it! Other than that he has nothing! He doesn't really talk to himself or babble either. And the only thing wrong with his hearing is selected deafness! He understands everything I say to him!
Do you think it's worth mentioning to th HV? I am a wee bit concerned about it,although every says he'll speak when he's ready.
He was tongue tied when was born but got it snipped when he was 2weeks, I can't help but wonder is it something to do with that?

It's worth talking to the HV just to put your mind at rest but to be honest i wouldn't worry too much.
At that age my lo didn't even say the ma and da that yours says. My lo has just seen the speech therapist who's said that although she does have a delay it shouldn't be anything to worry about. My lo is 27 months so a lot older than yours.

Hi thanks I might giver her a ring this week but honestly don't think she'll be very helpfull. It's hard not to worry when all his wee friends are chatting! Maybe I should just enjoy the peace!

I know what you mean. All of the children born within 3 months if Esther have been chattering away. As I've already got one that talks no-stop I'm not too bothered with Esther's lack if words lol.

Is there just one HV at your doctors. If not it might be worth seeing a different one if your not happy with your current one. I've loved both of mine (DS & DD are seen by two different HV's) so its made it easy to go to them if I've had concerns.

Yeah we just have the one HV. I'll give her a ring and see what she says.haven't seen her since he was 6 months so I'm sure she'll have no idea who I am when I phone!
Can I ask how the speech therapist assessed your esther?

As in what they did when i took her?

She took me in and Esther played with books and toys while she took details from me. Wile she was talking to me she also had an eye on Esther and just before she went over to Esther she told me that from what she'd already seen Esther 'talks' but hasn't got any actual words. Then she went and interacted with Esther by looking at the books with her and showing her pictures. She repeatedly showed her pictures of rabbits and elephants and said the word and also signed it. She could see that Esther was trying to say something similar.
Then she went through what we needed to do to help her.

You could try it a bit with your lo, if you don't already do it. Try and just one word. So not 'look 'x' there's a tree' but ''x' tree' and point to it.

my son has just turned 2 and really doesnt have any real words yet, i was worried so i spoke to my health visitor, the one i had when jacob was born was, to be honest a bit of a cow but since Lucas was born my new one has been great, she referred me to a speech and language place and so far we have only done the same as RachA we are waiting on an appointment to see a specialist and we are waiting on that now, i think its worth getting the ball rolling on these things just in case there is a problem, the earlier you catch things the easier they are to fix, just ask to see a different HV or if you can find the local childrens centres just ring them and they should be able to tell you where to go

Thanks ladies I think I will definetly give her a call and see what she has to say in the matter.
Feel like such a bad mother at times cos he doesn't speak feel like I've let him down by not doing something right!

Phoned HV and she says as long as he's hearing and understanding she isn't concerned. She would until he's 2.5 until they do anything and by that point I'll probably be wishing he'd shut up!
