Does everyone have it? Or is it just if there's things such as you're measuring ahead or sugar in urine etc? I have a major phobia of needles and only managed to let them do it once at my 12w scan because the downs testing from scan and bloods needed to be done the same day :/ xx

No - usually everyone has it done. It's to test for pre diabetes which is extremely important.

i didn't have it or wasn't even offered it which i thought was weird so i asked, apparently you're only offered it if any immediate family have diabetes/if your blood sugars are frequently high... i think it depends on the hospital though, i got dead confused!

Wow, that is strange.

Maybe it varies between the UK and US. I know it is pretty routine here.

yeah, was gonna say everyone from the US on here seems to have had it done - hence why i got so confused! i know my cousin had one done but that's cos they frequently found glucose in her urine, it's amazing how the 'rules' vary from country to country though

i didnt have to do it just because i was diabetic before i was pregnant but its not as bad they use a small butterfly needle(the smallest besides a needle used for infants)

Ahh okay thankyou, well no one in my family has diabetes and there's no history of gestational either so I hope I wont have to.. I feel so pathetic being scared of needles.. I wouldn't mind so much if it was just one that they could do wth the 28week routine ones, but it's the fact you have to have a one before and after you drink the stuff :( xx

It has never been mentioned to me and I don't think they'd do it now with me being nearly 34 weeks? I might be wrong though. I have seen a lot of posts on here about it and I did think it was kinda odd I've never had it done, but everywhere probably has different policies.

Hmm okay, maybe thye only offer it to everyone in the US or something then :) Ill read my nhs pregnancy book tomorrow ad see if it says in there! :)
Thank you girlies xx

It's easy! I was scared as well cause I don't like doing blood work but it was fine and it was all for my little one!

Yeah in the UK we don't get it done unless we have a risk factor xx

I had sugar in my wee with both babies so had the test done, i had GD which was a surprise first time cause i didn't have any other risk factors barr the sugar in my wee x

I only had to have mine because there's a history of diabetes in my family otherwise I wouldn't have had to have it. :)

i hate needles too, i don't mind injections cos the needle's literally straight in then straight out. i just can't stand the needle staying in there! i'd ask if you have to have one just to put your mind at ease :hugs: they aren't nice but i spose they gotta be done :( -coming from someone who's having one done this week after thinking they were all over with!- so yeah i feel your pain :sad1:

Ah okay thankyou! Sooo hope i dont have to have it done! Xxxxxx
