I'm 6 weeks pregnant and had 3 missed/silent miscarriages. All happened at the beginning of the second trimester. The doctors did loads of tests on me and the babies but nothing was found. They won't test for MTHFR because they said there is no proof that it affects pregnancy. They also ignore the fact that I have pcos saying that there is no proof that it affects pregnancy either. I didn't have any blood clotting disorders and baby aspirin didn't work. I also didn't have an issue with rh factor or incompetant cervix or any physical issues whatsoever. No hormonal or genetic issues have been found either.

Basically, i appear to be perfectly healthy and able to conceive and give birth with no problem...except it hasn't happened the last three times. I will say I did have living babies with my first marriage when i was 18 and 20. My first miscarriage was with my first marriage after the last living child. I was 23. The next one was with someone i was seeing after my divorce, and that was when i was 25. This final one is with my new husband, and that happened in april of this year (2011.) I am 31 now and 6 weeks pregnant. My first doctor appointment is with a maternal fetal medicine specialist i was seeing as a consultant earlier this year with the last baby. I figured a specialist would be best as my main obgyn, but I'm not so sure anymore.

I've seen several doctors and specialists. No one has found anything wrong nor do they look at what they deem to be controversial issues like pcos and mthfr. So now I'm scouring the net looking for people who have had my issue (several consecutive missed miscarriages) so that I can see if they've ever found a reason that this was going on and if they were treated and if they have had successful pregnancies resulting in live, healthy births since. I want to know the treatments and maybe even doctors names if you live in North Carolina. If you live no where near NC, that's fine too. I dont mind answers from anywhere in the universe as long as I get something. Please, if this has happened to you, email me and or answer me here and if you don't mind sharing details I'd appreciate it. I need hope.

Hi there I too have had three miscarriages with no cause found. Since you've had children you really might just have to keep trying as it shows you are able to. However, I really think it's a good idea that you're with a specialist now. I don't think pcos should be ignored. You can be given drugs to manage that. My misc have been in the last ten months and I'm thirty two now. It does sound as though the problem is an intermittent one with something going on with you but I also think you're more than likely be successful soon x x x I'm from the uk btw

Oh and mthfr def needs testing. If you are homozygous you need extra folic acid and heparin injections

My doctors refuse to test or address pros and mthfr. It's so frustrating. I might resort to begging.

You probably really need a specialist. Hopefully you won't need anymore tests x x x

That's who I'll be seeing but he as well as colleagues feel the same way about pcos and mthfr. Thanks so much for replying and good luck xxx

Hi,

I had a mc and two possible chemicals. After my second chemical, my GP put me on metformin, which has been shown in some studies to decrease the rate of mc, particularly for PCOS sufferers. We were also doing all the pre-IVF blood work and discovered that I had an underactive thyroid, and was prescribed medication -- this was doubled (but still a small dose) in May, and my blood work two weeks later, showed thyroid within 'normal', I had a perfect 28 day cycle (previously 21 to 44 days, altho we/GP thinks 44 day was a chemical), and whilst waiting for my period to start the hormone treatments/first cycle, discovered that I was pregnant naturally!

Male doctors don't always take PCOS seriously, so I would recommend that you do some extra research on metformin, which many women have found helpful. Also, get your thyroid checked, as in my case, we think it was the final key to sustaining (so far) a successful pregnancy. I also did acupuncture twice a week from Jan to April in preparation for IVF, which may have helped me relax/'detox' my blood flow. Incidentially, I probably got pregnant around day 10 of my cycle, not the 'magical' day 14, so also keep charting your periods to help you when you discuss with your doctor; our fertility specialist that we saw in February recommended that we try from day 7 to day 30 (!) based on my numbers above....

best wishes

N,

I am so sorry for your losses. You must be so frustrated. I am surprised that your doctor won't test for MTHFR after 3 losses. The test is usually a part of a routine repeat pregnancy loss panel. I also do not understand why he would say that MTHFR has nothing to do with pregnancy losses.

Women with the MTHFR polymorphism have a limited ability to break down synthetic folic acid to its active form, L-methylfolate. This puts them at risk for folate deficiency related pregnancy complications. As I am sure you know, adequate folate status is vital while trying to conceive and during pregnancy because of its role in DNA synthesis and repair. I work with NeevoDHA, a prenatal specifically indicated for women with MTHFR. It contains L-methylfolate instead of synthetic folic acid. L-methylfolate is a type of folate everyone, regardless of MTHFR status, can absorb and readily use. It is 7 times more bioavailable than folic acid.

My best friend had one normal pregnancy when she was younger. Then she had 4 miscarriages in a row. She had the RPL panel and was found to have heterozygous MTHFR (supposedly the less severe kind). She was put on a supplement with L-methylfolate and she has had a normal pregnancy and is due in January.

I hope you and your doctor are able to come up with a plan to ensure a healthy pregnancy. I wish you the best of luck!

Hi Holly, where do you buy this from?

F,

NeevoDHA is a prescription prenatal. Does your insurance cover prenatal vitamins?

NN,

NeevoDHA is not sold in England or Ireland, only in the U.S.

I am currently on neevo now and just started my lovenox injections every 12 hours. The doctors gave me a scare and thought I had miscarried but I went in Wednesday and my little bean has grown and has a heartbeat. My pharmacy is still hunting for some progesteronecream. Fingers crossed.

Congratulations nn! I hope this is 4th time lucky for both of us x x x
