4mm cervix- ptl concern///UPDATES: water broke 27w 6d/born 29w 6d

Hi Myra, glad to see you are still hanging in there. I have 5mm of cervix left and also have a pessary. I am on bed rest at home, and have been admitted just once overnight for contractions. I was just wondering, were you having contractions before your water broke? I know you said you were just laying in bed, but what was it like? did you notice losing the mucus plug before your water broke at all? Do we even have mucus plug with this little of cervix? Sorry for asking so many questions, it just seems like we have a lot in common with out lacking cervix and right now I am just on alert for my water breaking.... the waiting game is brutal...

Hi blucky- I just emailed you back form your PM but wanted to post my response here as well in case others are wanting the same info.

When my water broke, I was actually just laying in bed Saturday morning. I rolled over and felt a little liquid come out. I thought it was just a lot of discharge or my imagination. When I rolled over again, i felt the more wetness. Both times it was just a small amount- maybe a teaspoon? I assumed I must have somehow leaked urine, so I went to the bathroom and was surprised at how much "urine" came out. Then when I walked back to my bedroom, I saw my sheets were a tiny but wet and more liquid (maybe half a cup) came out and on the floor. That's when it finally hit me that it wasn't urine but my water breaking.

When we came to the hospital, they put me on a monitor for baby's heart rate and contractions. I couldn't feel them at all, but the monitor picked up that I was having contractions for about 12 hours before they subsided.

Have you talked to your doc about the contractions? Sometimes they can give you magnesium or something else to stop them. Also, have they given you steroid shots (Betamethasone)? If not, make sure you ask for them and don't take no for an answer4 if they are hesitant. EVERY doctor and nurse said the MOST important factor in him doing so well so far is that he had those shots. The steroids help mature his lungs. They give you 2 shots over 2 days and it takes 24 hours from the 1st one to make it to baby.

The nurse also told us that the stress on baby of my water breaking was also very helpful in lung maturation. All those stress hormones in his body helped to progress lung development further.

Good luck and please stay in touch and let me know how things are going an dif you have any other questions. I'm happy to answer any of them!!

Connor Snake C. born April 17th at 5:11pm at 29 weeks and 3 days. He weighed in at a whopping 3 lbs and 7 oz!!!! All docs and nurses were surprised at how bug he was. He further impressed everyone by letting out some good cries right after he was born, meaning his lungs were doing well. Our little overachiever also hans't had to be put on a breathing tube but has been breathing room air (sometimes with a CPAP) since he was born.

Connor had his first feedings overnight and he is tolerating them very well so far!

Yet another thing that is surprising nurses here is that I'm already producing milk. My 1st nurse told me not to wait til morning to start pumping, so 3 hours after he was born, I started. Pumping every 3 hours. I'm making just enough now to meet his feeding needs (they start low) and hoping to continue increasing my milk production. Because he was born under 30 weeks, he's eligible under our hospital's program for donor milk if he needs additional. So we signed him up for that.

We're still taking things hour by hour, day by day but are very encouraged by his first day and a half.

He is just lovely!! Congratulations and its good to hear he is doing so well. I really hope me and my son can follow suit. I'm praying we make it the next 10 days at least so he's got a chance at 24 weeks. Xxx

Thank you for your response. I have been on Procardia since Monday and still seem to have contractions through it.... the twins had steroids at the end of March and might have another round depending on what happens with me and this ptl thing. It sounds like it took you a minute to realize that your water had broken? I wonder how long you had a cervix of 4mm before your water broke? I guess Im afraid mine could break any minute now... with twins I can only imagine the weight is a little more and twin A has his head pressed firmly against my cervix, which I know isnt helping. They noticed my cervix was 5mm this past monday, but I have been on home bed rest for 4.5 weeks now. Did you notice that you were losing any plug?
your little boy is beautiful and your story gives me hope :)

Wow hun, congrats on your BEAUTIFUL little boy, he looks amazing for 29+3, Me and my husband are wishing you and yours lots of health and happiness xxxxx

I never noticed my mucus plug going at all. If I had, I might have been more aware that what I was experiencing was my water breaking. I dont know how long my cervix has been at 4mm.

You're doing a great job keeping your little ones safe and growing inside! Everyone says the primary reason our boy is doing so well is because of those steroid shots. You've done that. With the contractions you're having, it might also be helping mature your little ones lungs- just as we were told that the stress of my water breaking further helped our little guy. At the age your twins are right now, they have a great chance of being perfectly healthy, just small. I've heard that because twins come earlier than singles, so their bodies/processes mature a bit faster to help them be better prepared for an early birth. Keep me updated and let me know how things are going. :hugs:

Congratulations!!! He's beautiful!!!

So good to see how lovely he looks and how strong he is! I'm hoping my little one stays put for a lot longer, but it's so reassuring how well he is at 29 weeks (as that's where I am now!) And she's definitely a big un from the growth scans. I hope he continues to do well and your milk comes in quickly xxx

Wow, goodness, congratulations! He's gorgeous! So glad to hear that he is doing so well! :hugs:
