My 5 yo dd has started stuttering quite suddenly over the last couple of days. It's normally at the start of a sentence or though occasionally mid sentence. Her speech has always been excellent. She had some stuttering episodes as a toddler which we ignored and they went away but she hasn't had one of those for a long time. I've not mentioned it to her at all this time. Has anyone else had this with their child?

Hello, my son has an intermittent stutter. We're not yet sure if it's a developmental stutter or an actual speech impediment. Most developmental stutters are around the 18 month to 3 year mark if I remember what the specialist said correctly but it could be possible to happen later?

The specialist did ask if anything major has happened in our son's life recently as that can cause a stutter. Are you in the UK? Has your LO recently started school? Maybe that has triggered it? There is a girl in my son's school who has a stutter that is triggered when she is nervous or upset.

Stutter can be link to emotional development, in your case I’d say it’s more likely to be that since you’ve seen a bit of regression. As PP said, I’d be looking at possible factors that may have influenced her. Anything worrying going on at school, changes at home? New sibling? Anything you can think of, might even be something small. If you can deal with the smaller emotional issue, you may see the stutter improve too.

She has a new 7 week old brother (her second brother, who she adores). She has also just gone into year 1 at school so that's a big change for her from reception. She has been more stroppy lately and also asking for hugs more at bedtime, taking longer to settle to sleep etc. I have tried asking if something is bothering her but she hasn't shared anything and mostly seems happy and content with life.
