5 Yr Old Evening Wake Ups

Since before Christmas my son has more often than not woken up crying his eyes out multiple times during the evening and before about midnight. He won’t say what’s wrong and there is nothing much I can do to console him. Anyone experience anything similar or have any advice?

Is he definitely awake? If he wont answer to tell you what's wrong possibly he is still asleep and having a night terror? Can he remember waking in the night if you mention it the next day?
