I thought dd was babbling because she is soooo noisy. SHe is always making oohhh and ahhh sounds and different pitch noises, and she hums. I read last night that they are supposed to be babbling consonants by now (she is about 6.5 months) I don't hear her making any consonant sounds other than humming like "hmmm"...no ba or duh sounds. I'm also not sure she knows her name and I read she should respond to her name by now. She will at times respond to "sweetie pie" but not every time. Sometimes she is playing and pays no attention. When she does respond i'm not sure if she thinks it is her name (poor baby rarely hears her real name) or if she would have turned her head no matter what word I used. I see the pediatrician tomorrow but does anyone have any insight?

I think 6 months is early to be babbling. None of my friends babies babbled that early, I think the earliest was about 8 months. My LO is ten months he doesn't really babble he just says brr and grrr so he doesn't say dada or anything. I'm not too worried, when all the other babies are babbling I'll get worried!!

Ooh also to say I've heard they're usually either walkers or talkers, don't know if this is true but I think my LO will be walking soon so he's putting his energy into that so to speak x

I agree with pp, they tend to put all their energy in to one or the other. my second dd is just turned 8 months and has suddenly started with "da" "ma" "nu" and "ba" sounds all at once! not crawling and not really interested in it either, her sister was the same :)

My LO is same age an he says dadada but no other real babblings, just LOTS of noise lol, I'm not worried my friends LO is 4 months older and doesn't babble that much more. Im not sure if Noah knows his name, he does turn but he turns to all sounds so I don't know. I always try not to look too much at what they 'should' be doing, they'll get there eventually. But it's hard not to worry, your LO sounds fine to me x

I thought babbling was making all the sounds, not necessarily making sense, tho! My LO seems to recognise his name, but as for mama, dada - nope! He does a good 'aaaaaock', 'megeeeeee', 'alaaack' and a few other sounds, but I assumed it was normal. He does also yell ' eeeeeeeeeeeeelp', which we assume means...nothing! He also purrs like our cats, makes gutteral sounds like a dutchman and loves to scream and makes sounds like the devil incarnate.

Any advice you get, please share!

best wishes

Officially babbling is repeating constanant and vowel sounds together like baba, bobo lala. They don't make sense and are not in any context. Later on the mix it up like babalome, all there different sounds but mixed together, still not in context or with meaning. There are posh names for all the different stages but I can't remember them lol. But I always just think all sounds are babbles x

My son talks A LOT but doesn't repeat sounds like bababa or dadada or anything. He says "owwwwww" and "a-goo" and lots of other noises and yells, but I guess he doesn't technically babble.

DS just started babbling a week or so ago. He also 'growls' a lot, my only guess is he picked it up at daycare somehow. lol He's always been a vocal baby and not so much into figuring out how to crawl either. I wouldn't worry, they figure things out on their own time and when they're ready. xxx

Joni does rarararara! and she also blows raspberries like nobody's business! :haha: Oh and she also does something cute where she smiles real big, scrunches up her nose and breathes heavily.....wait...what is thread about again??

Just kidding, my oldest Alia didn't start "babbling" per se until 10 or 11 months? By 16 months she had a vocabulary of almost 100 words, and by 18 months she could name all her colours, name all her ABCs and count to 10! Now she's speaking in full sentences...pretty much speaking like an adult.
Moral of the story: Try not to fret about every single milestone...you're her mommy and you can tell if she's truly "behind" or if she's just spending all her energy on trying to crawl or working on her pincer grasp, or something :hugs:

Thanks ladies! I appreciate the reassurance. I don't know why I am super paranoid about autism all of a sudden. I see dd progressing but there are certain things she doesn't do, like babbling, or having back and forth conversation. SHe has no problem talking to herself, but doesn't talk back to me. I try to do things for her to mimic, like stick out my tongue or make noises and she just smiles and tries to grab my face. I see the pediatrician tomorrow but I don't even want to mention autism because he already told me twice to get off the internet  I guess I will just monitor it and give it a little more time. I think by a little over a year things will be more apparent if there is a problem. Thanks for the responses!

My lo is a talker, she does Mamama and nanana and bababa, but normally only on her own in her cot, stops when she sees anyone.

However she is slightly behind in her motor skills, so think its swings and roundabouts, wouldn't be concerned just yet x

My LO has only started babbling the last week or two... before then it was just noises and humming like you said... sounds normal to me hun :) x x x

DS doesn't 'talk' to me either...when I try he just looks at me like I'm stupid and goes back to blowing raspberries at his stuffed bunny lol :( I wouldn't worry hun :hugs:

Kristin is 8.5 months and is the same way. She occasionally says Ma but that's the only thing I ever understand and I don't think she says it meaningfully. I also wasn't sure she knew her name until this week and she frequently ignores us because we talk so much around her that she doesn't know when we are trying to get her attention sometimes. I was concerned a few months ago that she couldn't hear us but she is just ignoring us.

Kristin doesn't mimic either. She seems to really not like when we mimic her sometimes. :-P

Ha ha i too get the look for dd like I'm stupid and frequently feel ignored. It seems that if she is interested in something else, like we are outside in her stroller, she couldn't care less about me, but if she is bored she pays right attention! I talked to the pediatrician today and he said he was not concerned at all as dd seems very engaged when he spoke to her and she made facial expressions etc. He said not to get too hung up on milestones as there is a range and they are really looking for the big picture or very delayed things, so it made me feel a little better, and it helps to hear that some other babies are doing the same thing!

My lo started babbling mamamama, dadada, and bababa at around 5 months,it lasted about 2 weeks and then all I heard was the mmmm sound....now it's back to just dada....all of this came out of nowhere though and I catch her mouthing the sounds a lot too, don't worry it your lo can start any day now
