So my son is a big boy. At 6 months he was 25 lbs and 29 inches. Off the charts in weight and height. I EBF. He also eats fruit and vegetables twice a day since 4 months. I don't give him oatmeal or any juice. I make my own food. Even before he started eating fruits and veggies he has been in the 99th percentile. Big people run in both our sides of the family. My husband is 6'2", his Dad is 6'3". My Dad is 6'3" and my brother is 6'6". Anyway, so my son is 7 1/2 months and has never really moved much. He stays put in his crib. Lately rolls from side to side once he wakes up in his crib, just playing around. I have gotten his to roll from back to front but he only does this when I make a game of it. He is content to stay where ever he is. He has always been very strong. He has been standing assisted from 3 weeks. The nurses that give him shots say that he is the strongest 6 month old they have ever seen. He's also very happy. Always smiling. Doesn't cry much. Everyone tells me he's the happiest baby ever. This is my first so I don't have many babies to compare him to with this. He has also been a great sleeper. Since 4 months he has slept 10.5-12 hours straight every night.

My doctor says that everything is fine and that his muscles just aren't strong enough to move his body yet.

So, ladies that have had big babies can you please tell me your experiences. When did your children walk? Did they crawl? Were there any issues?

By the way, my husband never crawled, he just scooted on his butt and then walked.

I don't know if this is useful, but we had an acquaintance that had a baby boy a few weeks before us. Our boys were at the same gathering when they were about 8/9 months old. My son is tall (85%) but skinny (20%), and he's always been super active. At this particular party, my son was furniture walking, climbing up on a couch, crawling like a pro, etc. The other baby was on his back or tummy the entire time. And he was huge. Didn't move at all. Happy and content. We saw the same family when our kids were just 2, and he was walking just fine. I don't know what happened between or really anything else useful, but it's a small anecdote to share :)

As long as doc says he's OK, and he's a happy little munchkin, I wouldn't rush it. Having a kid that walked at 9 months and didn't sleep through the night until 20 months is not easy!

My oldest was this way. She was 25lbs at 5 months when I was worried about the same things you are, dr just said its because she was a little heavier and her muscles weren't strong enough yet, but it was all ok and normal. And some babies just aren't as interested in moving about as other babies. Give him time. He'll get to moving when he's ready!

DS2 is a big bubba. 98 percentile for height and weight.

He didnt roll until just after 7 months and started crawling new years eve just after 9 months. He is now pulling himself up and starting to cruise.

Dont stress...after my DS1 crawled at 7 months i was a little concerned also but now i know all babies are different xx

A friend of mine's chunky boy didn't even roll until he was 11 months! Started crawling soon after, then walked at about 13-14 months and is fine.

Another friend has a girl a couple of months younger than mine who looks like a 2 year old and has only just taken her first unassisted steps at almost 17 months. Never crawled. Barely ever rolled.

Don't worry.

Some babies are just content to sit. You said that he stands assisted and that your husband never crawled. I wouldn't be surprised if your son followed in your husbands footsteps... Hey look, a pun. Anyway, my son has always been over 95th percentile for height, but his weight has been more average. Unlike your son, however, he was very wiggly as a newborn and I could tell very early that he was going to be an early crawler. He ended up crawling at about 5.5 months. He was uncoordinated with it but mastered it at 6 months. Now at 10 months, he likes to stand, but doesn't like to try walking. All babies are different. Maybe mine will decide at 13 months that he's ready to try independent walking and maybe yours will decide at 10.5 months that he's ready to walk without ever bothering to crawl. Maybe he'll just get up and walk one day at 14 months. No one knows, but the fact that he is strong and can stand, shows that his muscles are developing. In terms of moving his body, that will come when he decides he's ready. Also remember that the average age for crawling is 9 months and some normal babies don't crawl until months after that. Your child is still on the earlier end for crawling.

Thank you all so much for your replies. It puts my mind at ease a bit. I will just wait and see what happens with my chubby boy!

That sounds all perfectly normal to me. My daughter is small (9th centile in height) and she started to crawl at 8 months exactly, was cruising by 8.5 months, and started to walk at 15 months. 7 months is still pretty early for much of that. 8 months for crawling seems average amongst my friends' babies. Most of them were walking before my daughter (one very early at 11 months), but 15 months is the average age for walking and it's perfectly normal still for it to not happen up to about 2 years. Sounds like he's doing great.

Average for walking is more about 12 months with 18 months being the outer limit of "typical."

My chunky monkey only started bum shuffling at 15 months and walked at 20.5 months! I had been convinced something was 'wrong' with her but she's now 4 and you'd never know she was slower to get moving!

Enjoy them not moving!

My teeny 6mo (16lb/7kg) has been shuffling backwards for weeks and has finally mastered the age of going forward, I'm dreading full on crawling and wished he'd stay still for a little longer

With a 3yo as well 2 mobile kids is the last thing I want!

Putting that all aside my eldest didn't crawl until 10 months and was walking by 14 months, he'll get there in his own time :)

Yeah, definitely enjoy the non-mobile stage... It's so much easier.
