Hey Everyone

My pregnancy with my daughter was really awful, it went fine up to 20 weeks and then at anomally scan we found out she had hydrops fetalis (fluid on chest cavity and adomen) she was given 10% survival but made it through and after 8 weeks in intensive care came home a very healthy baby!

This baby I was hoping for a much easier time! But no we had our nuchal transluency scan (12 week scan) last Wednesday. Baby all fine structurally and very active but had 8mm nuchal transluency very very very high!!! I was gutted. We then got sent to a hospital in (about 2 hours from where I live) London because of theseriousness of my last pregnancy we had an amnio/CVS and I got the results back today and they were all clear no down syndrome or any syndrome, full results will be back in a few weeks but mostly in the clear!

Still a very high NT so at 16 weeks got to go back for a ECG/Echo type thing for the baby as apparently high NT can indiacte heart problems, although at 12 week scan heart looks fine but is still too small to see properly!

Nightmare really, but happy that positive results came from CVS/amnio and that baby currently looks healthy!

Anyone heard of a high NT before without syndromes related? Doctors have been really good, but telling us maybe its one of those things doesnt give me the answers I want lol.

Hi there! Just wanted to say thanks for your thread as I've recently had a 3.5mm NT on my 11wk scan. I've had the CVS, just awaiting results. Can I ask, dud anything come back on your bloods? Our risk is apparantly 1:8.

Any advice much appreciated, we are distraught.

By the way, you may get more responses on the gestational complaints forum. X

Didn't want to run and read. I have no idea about these things, but I am glad your amino tests look good. Fx'd it is nothing, but I know I would be worrying too. Thinking the best thoughts for you and baby :hugs:

Hello

They didnt do bloods on me, as it was going to come back very high risk anyway apparently as 8mm is ridiculously high. But CVS says no to down syndrome etc, so they are kind of stumped at the moment. As baby seems quite happy and heart currently looks healthy, they are leaving me until 16 weeks when they will rescan and hope NT has gone down, although have been warned it may not go down. And then having baby's heart checked as could be problems there!

Its horrible isnt it, I just want to be told all will be ok but obviously no doctor will do that as they dont know its going to be!

I have everything crossed for you that your CVS comes back ok, when do you get results? Its a bit of a waiting game this pregnancy complications business! Ive now got a 3 week wait for full results and that scan!

Fingers crossed for us both that all turns out ok!

Well, typical me there wasn't enough cells on my CVS sample to do the quick testing so I'm waiting on a full chromosome screening which takes 10-14 days. The longest time of my life! The professor noticed on my scan that I have a single artery umbilical cord too which can point to other problems.

I bet you're clock watching like me! I don't know how you feel but I feel robbed of any excitement I should be feeling. We wanted to wait til the first scan before we broke the news to our friends, and because if all of this we have kept quiet.

Oh no that's rubbish about CVS results having to be delayed. Today when I found out we were all clear on the main syndromes made me feel a little better. It feels like one step has passed, just a lot more to go!

I hate the joy has been taken out of pregnancy, it's horrible and the exact same thing happened with my daughter, we got told she would be unlikely to survive and I didn't enjoy a second of the pregnancy after that. This time because of how amazing my friends and family were at helping us through that pregnancy, we have announced pregnancy and just said that its not as healthy as we would like, but at this moment in time baby is fine, which is true but don't want to go into details with everyone yet not until we have a bigger picture at 16 weeks.

Sorry to hear about the umbilical cord issue, it's things like that that just adds to the worry! But I guess they can't give you more info until baby is bigger?

I really Hope all works out for us both, please stay in contact and feel free to pm me at any time. I am 13 weeks and 2 days too (haven't changed ticker since scan) so we must be due same time!

I don't know much about nt scans but I didn't want to read and run and wanted to offer my support and best wishes everything will be fine xxxx

Don't want to put u down or anything but I have a friend who felt thru out her pregnancy that something was wrong with the baby but she went for her scan and it came out fine. Did her cvs and it was perfect too. But when her son was born he clearly had Down's syndrome. It was quite devastating since they were expecting a healthy child but they've come to terms that he has Down's syndrome and love him just the way he is. So sometimes those tests can be wrong and sometimes right or sometimes things just are caught in the beginning. But I'm glad to hear that everything is good for you. I'm quite nervous about mine in a few weeks also.

I hope everything will be alright for both of you. I know it is easier said than done, but it is very important that you stay positive and not over stress until we know everything for sure. xoxo

Hi All

Sorry for delay in reply to you all I have been on holiday!

Had CVS and amnio tests done and all clear for down syndrome etc etc. Baby structurally is fine and has a nasal bone (apparently thats really important in knowing about down syndrome) I have further scan at 16 weeks but at the moment in regular contact with fetal medicine but they are happy baby is healthy apart from the high fluid nuchal. Its weird because my daughter (born a year ago) had hydrops which is a lymphademia problem and is now perfectly healthy, this baby's thick NT is a lymphademia problem too so they are looking into that now! I have the best team working with me which helps a lot!

I also found out this morning from the amnio results that baby is a little boy!!! Team Blue!!!

Im staying positive because right now baby is healthy and thats all that matters, what happens in the future will happen and we will cope/deal with it if we have to cross that bridge!

Hi,

Sorry you are having to go through this worrying time, my little girl had a 4mm NT and unfortunately it didn't end well but I have heard plenty of stories where high NT measurements have come to nothing so hopefully this will be the case for you. Great news that you got all clear from CVS and fingers crossed your next scan will bring more good news. There is a forum on babycentre called Antenatal Scans and Results which is fab for getting support from people who have been through similar and there are a few on there who have had high NT measurements - one in particular I remember had a 8mm reading and went on to have a healthy boy with no apparent problems at all :) The charity ARC is also fab for support and they have a helpline you can ring to talk through the results of your scan.

Fingers crossed for you and sending big hugs, I know how worrying it is xxx

I'm not sure if this is a help, but my son has a serious congenital heart defect which wasn't picked up until after he was born. His NT was normal, and in all the 'heart mummy' circles I've never heard anyone speak of correlation between NT and heart defects. If, however, it does turn out to be heart related please do come back to me and I'll put you in touch with lots of very helpful ladies and resources. Please try not to worry. Best wishes, Cx

Thank you everyone for your replies! Well I finally had my 16 week check up scan and they checked babies heart, all fine and healthy and nuchal fold is now within correct measurement for this time, they are saying its just one of those things! I'm very happy that all has currently turned out ok! They are going to keep an eye and I'm having regular scans but at the moment ok!
