Good afternoon ladies,

I'm going for a blood test later to see if I have slapped cheek virus - red blotchy face that literally looks like I've been slapped! and I wondered if you or anyone you knew has had it whilst pregnant????

Fingers crossed I'm just SERIOUSLY blooming! But any replies will be greatly appreciated x

Thank you
Nicola

I don't have it (but seriously i have every other symptom in the book :) - but from what I read it's not a virus and you don't need to cure it, it will go away once the bubs is born the latest. It's not dangerous or anything.

I'm a bit worried about this too, as the brother of one of Aaron's friends has it. The parents explained they had kept the brother home so as not to expose me to it (which was very considerate of them), so I just hope that the rest of the family aren't already infected!

It sounds scary but they say complications are very rare if it is treated early. I'm sure you and baby will be fine if you do have it. :hugs:

I hope you do not have it, we refer to it as Fifths desease. I work with young children so I was tested to see if I had already had it, luckily I had had it so I have a life long immunity to it. I do not know what it does to the baby, but we are not allowed to allow any of our pregnant mom's or workers (who have not been tested or are not immune to it) into the room where the child has it.

FX'd for you!

Thank you x

I always have had a "healthy" glow but since being pregnant I look quite pink most of the time! It was just the blotchiness that worried me this morning.....

I am thinking positively but please add comments, anyone, if you have had or known of this during pregnancy.

Thanks again,
Nicola xx

Hi there,

I did have this before I was pregnant and basically came out in a nasty rash and all of my joints became stiff and ached - almost like arthritis.

The doc didn't give me anything, just said the virus would run its course and to rest.

Not sure the implications when pregnant but I know it's a common virus in children...

Good luck at the docs and hope you feel better soon. You could always ring NHS Direct or your midwife for advice.

Found this for you.. looks like there's very little chance of harm but it will mean the doctor will monitor you more closely through pregnancy to be safe.

Fifth Disease in Pregnant Women
Generally, most pregnant women experience no serious complications if they are exposed to the parvovirus B19. In fact, about half of all women are already immune to the virus (although they may not know it) due to a previous exposure. Those women who do get sick usually experience only mild symptoms with no ill effects on their baby.

For some women, though, parvovirus B19 can lead to severe anemia in the baby and may even cause a miscarriage. The risk of this happening is higher for those women in the early stages of pregnancy. However, this occurs in less than 5% of pregnant women who have been exposed to fifths disease. There is no evidence to support the idea that the virus can lead to birth defects or mental ******ation in a child.

I’ve Been Exposed, Now What?
If you suspect or know you’ve been exposed to the virus, contact your health care provider. She can perform a blood test to see whether or not the parvovirus is present in your blood system. If the virus is present, your health care provider may decide to monitor you more closely.

There is no vaccine or preventive medicine available for fifth disease. In fact, there is very little you can do to avoid being infected with the virus other than washing your hands frequently. Since people are contagious before they develop the characteristic rash of fifth disease, it is difficult to evade exposure. However, if you know that there is an outbreak in your work place, you may choose to steer clear until the outbreak has died down. This is entirely a personal choice, though.

Hi, your UK aren't you? There was something about parvovirus in that magazine you get in the bounty info thing from the midwife at booking. I was worried about it because young children are prone to it and it is VERY contagious, it can wipe half a class out. It does literally look like someone has slapped you as when you touch your skin it leaves a red mark. Get to your dr's asap, I can't remember what the article in the magazine said but I think there's something they can do not to get rid of it but to minimise it's effect on you and bubs.
