With our first child, we had no idea what the gender was going to be until the very last second, so we got sort of used to calling it "the child". After he was born, we weren't used to calling him by his name (Evan), and for the first couple of months still caught ourselves occassionally referring to him as 'the child' which got us some weird looks, and a few evil comments.
Now that I'm preg with our second child, once again it looks like we won't know the gender until the very last second - my ultrasound for January and then the baby is supposed to be born in February. I feel silly calling it 'coffee bean', which is our secret name for it since it's ALWAYS active, so DH and I decided what we would do is pick a name that suits both a boy and a girl so we can used to calling it by name.
We chose 'Willow' for a girl, and 'William' if it's a boy, and we've gotten used to just calling it 'Will'.
I dunno if anybody else had/has this same sort of problem, but I figured I'd put it out there, just in case
