A simple fix to calling your baby by name, even if it's unknown gender...

With our first child, we had no idea what the gender was going to be until the very last second, so we got sort of used to calling it "the child". After he was born, we weren't used to calling him by his name (Evan), and for the first couple of months still caught ourselves occassionally referring to him as 'the child' which got us some weird looks, and a few evil comments.

Now that I'm preg with our second child, once again it looks like we won't know the gender until the very last second - my ultrasound for January and then the baby is supposed to be born in February. I feel silly calling it 'coffee bean', which is our secret name for it since it's ALWAYS active, so DH and I decided what we would do is pick a name that suits both a boy and a girl so we can used to calling it by name.

We chose 'Willow' for a girl, and 'William' if it's a boy, and we've gotten used to just calling it 'Will'.

I dunno if anybody else had/has this same sort of problem, but I figured I'd put it out there, just in case

I love the name Willow -- So pretty! Thanks for the advice! I can imagine it might be challenging to not have a name to call the baby towards the end of pregnancy. I would never be able to go without knowing the gender, tho -- I have no patience! If the baby didn't cooperate during the u/s i would pay for a private scan! I had one done with my son... even tho we knew the gender! Do they have places like that near you? It was great -- a relaxing non-medical u/s to see the baby! They gave me a video & tons of pictures... and i got to "see" him for 30 minutes. I think the place was called "Womb with a View" and it wasn't very expensive!

Anyhow... thanks for the suggestion & congrats on your "yellow" bump!

Theres a place that's a bit of a drive away, but its costs about $200 to go and do it, and that's about $200 more than we can afford. :( The local hospital has a policy of not telling the gender, because they're all paranoid they'll get sued if they say it's one gender and it comes out not what they said
