What do you guys think? I've seen a lot of people in the US post saying they are having a cesarean due to the size of the baby.

ACOG posted this on facebook today:
"In new Committee Opinions released today, ACOG says pregnant women should plan for a vaginal birth unless there is a medical reason for a cesarean and that suspecting a large baby is not a medical reason to deliver before 39 weeks."

I never realised people were told to have C-sections for bigger babies, I'm pretty sure they don't even consider it in the UK?? I guess it makes sense because people usually successfully deliver big babies, plus they can quite often be very wrong about the weight anyway. xx

My 1st was 9lbs 11oz and I had him naturally. My cousin had a section a couple of years later (In Scotland) because she was having a 'big baby' of 8lb 6oz. This time we are both pregnant at the same time and both expecting big babies and I haven't even considered a section but she is having another section. I guess they must be offered with big babies for some reason or other but I was never offered one and wouldn't have agreed to one unless it was best for baby anyway. My cousin actually insisted I would be forced to have a section this time! I tried to patiently explain that I'll be fine with a natural birth but she doesn't seem to want to listen lol.

I think that's awesome...by NO fault of the mother....I hear new mom's all the time say...I'm having a big baby..should I have a c-section. First of all, if I had a penny for every time I heard someone tell me a dr told them they were having a big baby...only for it to be waaaaaay under estimated...and 2)we stretch....we ALL stretch....big baby or not...I think people under estimate their bodies...if my 5'3 girlfriend can birth a 10 pounder without drugs....clearly our bodies can do it!!!!.....and I really don't think it's the moms fault...I think they just trust their dr's TOO much....So I'm glad to hear this....

I think that's great.

I wonder if expecting a large baby due to GD would fall under medical reasons?

I think it is shocking to see an above sized average baby as a reason a cs, I mean maybe there is a place for it, like when a baby is 14lbs due to GD, but usually a woman wont grow a baby that is too big to be born. I am expecting a big baby, which is no surprise because all the babies in our family are big. I was shocked when the doctor mentioned inducing 3 weeks early if baby looked like it was over 9lbs! I'm in Portugal and it has to be said a lot of Portuguese women are small with narrow hips but I'm not Portuguese, I'm tall with wide hips. I'll be surprised if my baby is under 9lbs and there is no way I'll be being induced 3 weeks early for it, I'm sure that would be much more likely to cause problems than a big baby. He didn't mention a cs but I'm sure that would have come up next. I decided not to have the baby at that hospital after that visit, they are too intervention happy for my liking.

I think it should be a decision made by the mother and doctor together. Personally I'll do just about anything to avoid a c section but it's easy for me to say because my son wasn't that big (average). I think some women do jump to get a c section a little quickly but on the other hand, I don't like anyone telling me what I can or can't do regarding the birth of my baby.
