So, my adoption appointment comes up this Wednesday morning (9am). I have prepared some questions. I thought I would share them with you lovely ladies. Please let me know if you can think of any other questions or concerns, as I am worried I might forget something! Getting excited, but trying not to get too excited, KWIM?!!

Adoption Questions

1. What are the qualifications to be eligible to adopt?

2. What circumstances would disqualify someone from adopting?

3. What is a “typical” adoption process and timeline?

4. What are the reasons why infants are available for adoption?

5. How often are infants available for adoption through the ministry?

6. What is required from us in order for us to adopt?
a. Medical records?
b. Financial statements?
c. Home suitability?

7. If we do adopt a native baby, will this child have any links to his/her original band?
a. Required ceremonies?

8. We are interested in a native infant/newborn less than 4 weeks old – preferably Cree. No known exposures or risks. No preference of sex. Is this a possibility?

9. What are the average costs involved with an adoption similar to what we are requesting?

10. What is the average wait for a child, under the circumstances we are requesting?

11. Is the adoption finalized before or after the child is placed in our home?

12. If the adoption is finalized afterwards, what is the average wait before it is finalized?

13. Is it possible for the birth mother to seek and be awarded custody of her birth child during or after the adoption process?

14. Is there a choice between open or closed adoption? What is the definition of each?

15. What is a home study, what does it entail, and how long does it take?

16. How is it decided if we are eligible for adopting?

17. How long until we are notified of whether or not we have been accepted?

:hugs:

very comprehensive list of questions, very thought out - i reckon they'll see you as a more than suitable home. Good luck sweetie x x x

JASMAK there is a good site called www.canadaadopts.com that you may be interested in. It's a very friendly board and there are lots of folks from your area as well who have adopted from the Ministry as well as some who have adopted Native children cross-culturally. Good luck!
