Advice on Colposcopy

Hello, long story short, I had my first smear in January at 26 years old (I put it off due to fear, kicking myself now ) and the results came back as abnormal and I had to have another smear in July, those results came back abnormal requiring further investigation. They booked me an appointment for a colposcopy, which is tomorrow. I have not researched this procedure incase I come across any horror stories that makes me more nervous than I am already. What I am.most concerned about is my ability to give my daughter a brother or a sister in the future, we tried for 3 years to conceive dd and we would love to have more children but I'm just concerned that if I have to have (best case scenario) laser treatment or anything more that it will cause scarring or some other issue that will leave me unable to conceive. Could anyone give me any advice regarding this? Thank you

I had one in febuary and it came back there were mild abnormal cells and I am having another done at the beginning of next year to see if they have changed and if I will need them removed. I know a lot of people who have had there cells removed and went on to have more children, although it puts you at risk of premature labour as it can weaken your cervix (the treatment not the biopsy) I only just learnt that the scarring from the biopsy can cause your cervix not to dialate in labour which is quite scary for me because I had a lovely first labour with quite quick dialation and hoped when we had another it would be similar.

I had one years ago (probably 2009?) and then again maybe last summer. The first was due to several abnormal smears, like yours, the second one, my smears had been fine, but I'd been having several months of abnormal bleeding (no idea why, it's stopped now and all is fine) and while they were in there doing a transvaginal ultrasound to check for polyps, the OB saw a weird bit of tissue (which was more than likely just scar tissue from the last biopsy) and biopsied it again. Both came back fine, with no real concerns. I had my daughter in 2013 and got pregnant easily (2nd cycle, even though I'm in my 30s and had been on the pill since I was in my teens). It caused me no problems at all. Get it done and try not to worry about it. The things that can lead to an abnormal smear can be the same things that can lead to infertility, so if it took awhile to conceive the first time, the best thing you can do is have it checked and taken care of. More than likely it's nothing. I haven't had an abnormal smear since my colposcopy in 2009 and had no issues at all from having it done, other than a day or two of discomfort and spotting. Try not to worry. It's a very common procedure and something many women will do at some point. Oh, and I should add that my first birth was fine - relatively quick, easy home birth, and I dilated quickly from nothing to fully dilated in about 6 hours.

I had a Colposcopy last November then had cold coagulation to remove the cells. I was worried sick about getting it done but it was over in a few minutes !.

I am due to go back next year after my baby is born as they wouldn't do a smear while I was pregnant.

Yea this happened to me the scar tissue from the cervical treatment prevented dilation, I wish I'd known before planning to give birth at home this time round. I had to transfer and have lots of pain relief but still managed a vaginal birth.

Hugs hun!! I have had 2 colposcopies and a LEEP. The colposcopy wont effect your fertility at all, they only take a teeny tiny sample and send it to the lab. My colposcopy came back as very close to cancer to I had to have a LEEP where they took a bigger chunk of cervix. But even now my OBGYN says ot wont effect fertility or being able to have a healthy pregnancy. Good luck hun

I didnt know that!! Good to know and keep in mind as we are planning on getting pregnant again soon

Hi all, thanks for your replies! Colposcopy went much better than I expected, I had a biopsy and the results came through a few days ago, it's a mild abnormality requiring no further treatment and she'll see me again in 6 months - woo!
My next question is, do I wait the 6 months for the next appointment, then the extra month for the results to come through, missing around 7 possible baby making cycles or do I just go for it seeing as I don't need any treatment? I've booked an appointment at my doctors but couldn't get one until the 9th December, which would mean another baby making cycle missed. We've been putting life on hold for so long, with getting married and then awaiting these results, I just feel like I can't wait any longer, our dd was 3 two weeks ago and we just want to move forward and have more children. Thanks again for your advice, I only had a little punch biopsy so I assume that won't affect my cervix too much as I dilated super quickly on my dd too x

Good news !! .

I would just go for it seeing as how no treatment was required and your appointment is 6 months away. If you get pregnant they will just book you in for another smear after baby is born.

Its very reassuring that you didnt need any treatment. Like you said you have had to put it off for long enough. Its a difficult choice though. We did put off TTC for a few months after my treatment but just went for it in the end. Maybe if your still unsure wait and speak to your GP.

I would say go for it, if there is no further treatment. You can just get another checkup on it after baby is born
