Advice please

Hi everyone,
Have posted my progress on forum under 1st trimester - basically i have been having a lot of brown discharge since 5 weeks & 2 episodes of fresh bleeding 5 days apart. Lower abdo pains becoming slightly more frequent (enough to make me stop what i am doing & rub my tum or sit down for a while but they never last longer than 5-10 seconds). Scan at 6+3 showed egg & no baby & i am awaiting an 8 wk scan booked for next thursday.
My partner & i have prepared ourselves for the worse & fear our baby is already lost.
What i'd like to ask is what options were others in similar situations given please? I kinda know i have choice of D&C or wait for natural miscarraige, any idea how long natural may take? Did anyone return to work/normal life whilst waiting for it to happen? Will i know if/when i actually loose the baby?

Sorry if i seem pessimistic (?sp - apologies) but i feel if i set myself up for the worse news then it can only get better eh! Also feel stronger if i know my options as the epu were very unhelpful at the last scan & i don't want to get home & feel alone without any help once they have washed their hands of us (my GP is not much good either).

So sorry you are having to go through this sweety.

I can only go by my own experiences. The first m/c was a completed miscarriage so I started bleeding and passed little one within days. I took the week off of work as I had no idea what to expect as I was not told anything.

My second was an incomplete miscarriage of which I had an operation.

In my heart of hearts, I knew both pregnancies were not going to go full term and 13 months and 4 months after they have happened, this experience has not put me off trying again.

You hear of remarkable stories where ladies bleed and have cramps and still go on to have a full term pregnancy.

So so sorry to hear your going through this and pray you won't get the worst news.

My first mc was before I had my son 3 yrs ago at 7 wks, I had bleeding and cramps went for a scan which showed nothing hosp thought id got dates wrong and was booked for another scan a week later but that night I stood up and felt something down below and knew id lost the baby - I'm sure you will know if the worst happens. 2nd time I had mmc found out last weds at 12wk scan that baby had died at 8wks + 2 and had my ERPC/D&C yesterday.

I'm thinking of you and hope you will find this forum as comforting as I have!

Hey hon,

I have my fingers crossed for you that its good news. I had my first scan at 6 weeks and all they could see was an empty sac. I went back 2 weeks later and we saw the heartbeat! Sadly I then went on to have a mmc, but that isn't to say that you will. I really hope that things work out for the best for you.

I went in for and erpc (D&C) the same day I found out as the thought of waiting for it to happen naturally distressed me far too much. I then took a week off work. I hope that this is just information for you and that you won't have to go through it in reality.

Hey limpetsmum. I hope that this all turns out to be a scare, rather than a MC. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you.

As for my experience...
I went for a scan at 11 1/2 weeks, just routine, nothing untoward... hadn't had any bleeding. Unfortunately it showed that my baby had stopped growing at 6 + 4 weeks. I had to wait a week for a follow up scan, and had my EPRC last Wednesday.

As for waiting, as you can see from the above, sometimes MC can take ages to naturally happen (in my case I was 12 weeks plus and still hadn't miscarried naturally). However, some people prefer natural miscarriage, as it avoids the need for medical intervention, and the slim risks associated with the procedure. I also understand that natural MC can in some cases be quite painful.

However, for me, and some others, the operation was the only way to stop the agony of waiting. It is also a good "clear out" (sorry to sound coarse)- as it means that you body is left with a blank canvas to build another good lining. It can take longer, I believe, though for your hormone levels to go back to zero- as the body is catching up with the operation. Whereas natural M/C your body is depleting your hormones at the same rate as the bleeding.

Hope that your next scan shows everything to be ok.

As you are having bleeding, if you are miscarrying, then I'd imagine that it is starting. For me, I carried my baby for 5 weeks without any sign that I'd miscarried so I had to have an ERPC. As you are quite early on, they might recommend you wait to let it happen naturally, although I'm really not sure about that.

Some people do experience bleeding through their pregnancies so maybe everything will be ok xxx

I havent returned to work yet as have found it tough, i miscarried at 8 wks but luckily the hospital were really great, i was given 3 options miscarriage brought on, to go natrual or go into theartre, we choose miscarriage induced as i wanted to pass it as natrual as could be, and also the doctor at the hospital said thats the best choice to go for, but at the end of the day its for u to make the choice as horrible as it is' as ur the one who has to go through it'

I had a MMC at my 12 week scan. I opted for a DC as I had a polyp growing on my cervix that the doctor needed to remove anyway and I just wanted it to 'be over' (had lots of bleeding throughout the entire pregnancy due to polyp). I had a week off work and although I physically felt fine 24 hours later, emtionally I really needed the week. Work was great and let DH have a week as well (we work for same company) so I had lots of support and cuddles.

Time wise I have had about 2 weeks off work.
1 week when I had my first scan, and found out the baby had stopped growing. 2nd week after D&C.

Doctor's are willing to sign me off for more... but can't face hanging about at home any longer.

I think everyone is different, and you need time off I think the doctors are very good at making sure you have the right sick notes etc. The good thing is (well, don't know if anything is "good" under the circumstances, but you know what i mean). Is that employer's cannot use any sick time relating to your pregnancy against any targets. i.e. if you have pay rises dependent on sick leave, they cannot count the time you have taken off.

There is no point going to work if you are not physically or mentally fit to be there.

Thank you for all your comments, i am just trying to get my head around it all & they are a positive step towards this.
Today i have started bleeding more & although it is dark blood it is still fresher than it has been (i am getting through a pantyliner an hour for the past few hours & dripping blood when i do go to the loo but no clots or anything so far). I have very mild period type cramps (never had them much but they are not stopping me from being up & about), am i wrong in expecting to be in more pain if i were miscarrying? I guess i'm just not sure what to do......do i tell someone medical? Go to my local hospital or just bear with it & wait for my scan on thursday?

Im so sorry to hear you are going through this. I too have now suffered 3 m/c, all very early between 4 and 6 weeks. They started with light bleeding and back pain, to heavy bleading and period like cramps. I wouldn't say the cramps were really painful but they were uncomfortable. I think the further along you are the more painful.... although I dont know for sure.
Just sending you lots of hugs and thinking of you at this difficult time.

If you are going through a panty - liner an hour, I would go to the ER. I had bleeding in both of my successful pregnancies, but never with cramping. Bleeding with cramping, unfortunately, is not a good sign. I wouldn't wait for your scan...I would go right away. I hope that I am wrong, but, with my own experiences, it doesn't sound good. Please keep us updated, and I will be thinking of you and hoping for the best. Lots and lots of these:
