Thoughts on baby boy name Alaric...heard it on the History channel the other day and I liked it :) Never met one here (Southern USA)

Pronounced: ALL-uh-rick on the show (king of the Goths who defeated Rome in 410AD) not pronounced like a-LAR-ic (as it is on the Vampire Dairies lol)

I originally said it a-lar-ic which may be an issue with people pronouncing the name correctly? You may find that you get asked how to say it or are correcting the pronunciation of it.

Although we had that for a while with my dd and her name is pretty straight forward!

I like that it is different and the reasoning behind it

x

Thanks!! Yeah, I bet a lot of people would mispronounce / misspell it, but we already get that tons...and our names are - like you said - straight forward! People can be so strange...lol

I know it as Al.ugh.rick or Al.er.ick. Was a character in a book I loved by Katherine Kurtz and I think it's beautiful. I would just hope it doesn't get lost being shortened to Al or Rick.

Just so you know, there is a Dr. Seuss character with the name in the book The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins:

Sir Alaric : https://www.shmoop.com/500-hats-bartholomew-cubbins/minor-characters.html

"Sir Alaric is the Keeper of the King's Record. In other words, he's a professional recorder in the days before computers. As such, his job is to keep track of how many hats multiply atop poor Bartholomew's head. Thanks to his efforts, we know the answer to be 500 and so can title the book properly. The ??? Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins just would not do."

I have never heard the name before but I like it :)

I like it! One of my nephews has this as his middle name, his first is James.

I've always really liked it. It's on my shortlist of boys names. Like a previous poster said, my only concern would be either people would try to shorten it to Al or Rick, neither of which I am particularly fond of. I also like the name Archer, but really do not like the nickname Archie. It is tough for me to pick any name based on its face value merits alone.

I love the name. I immediately thought king of the goths (I love history). A great name.
