Hi all

I've been 100% off any alcohol ever since I got pregnant as advised.

So, are foods like spaghetti vongole ( mussels & pasta cooked in white wine) and casseroles like beef casserole cooked with red wine to be steered clear of too? I was wondering if the high heat from the cooking process evaporates away the alcohol and only leaves behind the flavour.

help!!

Thanks!

although i do not drink i do eat some foods that have been cooked in wine as they say cooking burns off the alcohol and as loads of people say you can have a glass every now and again i figure there must be such small amounts that you actually eat it can not be doing any harm, suppose its down to personal choice

Cooking definitely burns off the alcohol so I'd say it's fine :)

sorry just a quick add, you might want to double check mussels though?

yes the alcohol burns off if it is cooked correctly so there shouldn't be any problem. in the same way that you wouldn't get breathalised.

hiya thanks for the quick reply!!
glad that I can still take my casseroles and foods cooked in high heat with wine.
I checked on the mussels....was advised that it's okay to take shell fish as long as they are well cooked!

I think you'd be ok with cooked food but be careful of pudding which may have spirits in them like tirimisu, trifle, brandy infused cream etc.

its fine cooked food the alcohol will have been cooked off and even alcoholic deserts are fine in moderation if you are fine with consuming a little bit lol. i cook alot with wine and ive had to buy a non alcohol wine to drink when im cooking with wine as i normally have a glass while im cooking lol

Alcohol doesn't cook off 100%, but there's so little left after cooking it won't be any kind of an issue. The important thing is to be sure it's well cooked after the alcohol is added (for example, don't eat pasta sauce that's had red wine added right before turning the heat off!) It's almost impossible to completely avoid alcohol - even really ripe fruit, and some fruit juices, often have a tiny amount of alcohol in them!!

Thinks about it this way...a plate of pasts is not going to get you tipsy, so the traces of alcohol (if any) left after cooking will be extremley minimal.
