Am I doing it right?!

Ok after reading a couple of threads I really am CONFUSED at the way I'm making up Aiden's bottles and I'm now scared that the way I've been doing is dangerous!

Here is what I do:

Wash all the bottles up in hot soapy water and rinse them. Put them all into the microwave steam steriliser. Whilst this is going, I empty the kettle and put in fresh water and boil it.

When the bottles are done I take them out after having thoroughly washed my hands and I fill them with the freshly boiled water from the kettle. I then put the lids on.

When Aiden wants a feed, I heat the bottle of water in a jug of boiled water and then add the milk powder.

Is this right?! Because this is, I'M SURE, what the health visitor told me to do.

Aiden is a month old today and hasn't been ill or anything but I'd hate to think I'm doing it all wrong!

Things might have changed in the past 2 years but when I had Caitlyn we weren't allowed to make up bottles early and powder isn't sterrile so it had to be made with boiling water..?

That sounds great  your supposed to leave the water half an hour before making the bottle up so that sounds fine x

I thought it was that you weren't allowed to leave it more than half an hour?

I'm sure your supposed to leave it for half an hour or you can burn the formula. x

I think the way you're doing it is fine to be honest. It's all very well the HV saying you have to make up a bottle with brand new cool boiled water every time but that's easier said than done when you have a hungry screaming baby in your arms and then you have to go boil the kettle and wait for the water to cool down lol I think as long as the bottles are sterilised and the water you put the formula into is warm then I don;t see any problem :)

Thanks ladies, bit soooo confused still! Am I doing it right or not??

Also, why does the water have to cool down for half hour before I put it in the bottles? Surely it doesn't make a difference if it cools down in the kettle or the bottles?

But I don't put the formula in until later on when Aiden wants feeding! Until then, the bottles of water sit at room temperature until they get used.

I did it that way, and we were just fine. I think they just mean it should be cooled half an hour. Either way I filled up my bottles and lined them up in my cupboard and used when needed. :hugs:

Thanks Wendino!

But it won't make a difference that I don't leave it to cool half an hour and I just fill all 6 bottles up with water straight from the boiled kettle will it?

i've always done it just the way you've described honey and it's been wonderful :) i add the formula when needed to a cold bottle and heat. i have to agree with bexy, it's great the hv saying make up a new one every time with the kettle etc, but i found this impossible if i'm honest x

nope hon! imo this is fine, just how we still do it now :D

this is exactly how i done it with my 2 yr old hun and will be with this one too my hv said as long as lid goes straight on and feeed used within 24 hrs its fine just told me to not add powder untill reaady for feed which is how u are doing it so dont worry ur doing just fine

Everyone does it differently, it is whatever suits your lifestyle. I make my bottles in advance and store in my fridge ready to go. When I need my milk I take it out the fridge and warm it up. If I am going out I make up my bottles and keep them warm in a TT insulated carrier. Works for us and my LO has never had any problems like tummy ache or anything.

I guess you find what works for you. Good luck...

Nope, not at all! :) Just should be cooled a bit before you add the powder. So sounds good to me!

This page gives a pretty detailed explanation of the safest way to prepare a feed.

Wow! It seems you ladies have to go through a lot to clean and make bottles. I wash bottles in hot soapy water and leave them to dry on a bottle rack and then when Bryson is hungry, I use room temperature purified bottled water in the bottles and add the formula and give it to him. I have never had a problem and he is just fine. Different customs I guess.
