Don't suppose anyone's baby has had one?

If so, did it clear with antibiotics? And did it reoccur?

Doug has had a tiny lump for a few months but i just ignored it and it suddenly got bigger and I could see it's full of pus. GP has given us flucoxacillin but I am being a typical mum and worrying it is going to be resistant or get bigger and bigger or pop or go septic or something.

My little boy had one when he was five weeks old, we tried with the antibiotics but unfortunately they didn't Work, He had them for a week and he needed to have it drained and removed at six weeks old. They did an investigation and told me there was a chance it would reoccur as he has a fistula that is not meant to be there. I was told it is very common for little boys and if it hasn't come back within a year then the chances of it coming back are very very slim.

I know you were already worrying so I'm sorry if my story makes you worry even more but I was told by the doctors that Henry had quite an extreme infection (from small lump to massive pus one in less than a week) normally the antibiotics work for other children.

I really hope your little boys one clears up with the antibiotics

Thanks for the reply. Would rather you be honest about it :flower: it doesn't make me more worried in fact it's reassuring, it's hard to find much info online so I'm not sure what the next level of treatment would be, it's good to have some insight.

What was the procedure for draining and removing? And what size was it?

I think Doug's is about the size of a pea. There has always been a lump there but it wasn't visible, I could just feel it when I wiped him. I assumed it was a prominent blood vessel. The doctor said maybe he has a cyst there that has become infected.

I did read online that it's common in male babies.

We've done two days worth of antibiotics now and no change yet but I know it's early days.

He's not in any pain which is good. The doctor was surprised.

Thank you again for your reply x

That's good that he isn't in pain, my little boy seemed to really suffer with his, although it happened around the same time as a growth spurt so I will never know what was making him so unsettled. I think it was pain though as he would scream during ever nappy change and examination (first doctor didn't know what it was and we ended up being sent to two different hospitals and seen by seven doctors) His started off quite small then grew to the size of a 5p practically overnight and was quite raised. The hospital gave us infant paracetamol and ibuprofen and told me to give it to him regularly.

He had to have a general anaesthetic to have it drained and removed, he was in theatre for about an hour but they did a examination of the fistula so I think that's why it took longer, I was originally told it would only take half an hour.

I really hope the antibiotics clear it up for your little boy. I found the after care from the operation really hard, I had to keep the wound and bandages clean and dry which obviously isn't easy with a six week old baby!

Yeah that's what I wouldn't look forward to-the after care!

I'm sorry your little boy had to have a general, that must have been worrying for you. Fingers crossed the antibiotics work in our case. It's definitely smaller than a 5p but it is quite raised and feels as though it goes quite deep. The doctor seemed fairly confident though x

My son had one at 6 weeks old. It wasnt causing him any oain that i could tell but it was raised so i took him to hospital to check it after a useless gp told me that it was piles! The doctor drained it once and gave him antibiotics to help clear it. It came back up after a day or two so they lanced it again which did the trick and once he finished the antibiotics it never came back. Hes now 2 and a half and its never come back.

Did it hurt him to have it drained? How did you keep him still?! Xx

Is it actually on his anus? I've just had surgery this week to remove a massive abscess from my natak cleft and it has not been fun.

An abscess won't vanish with antibiotics, the pus needs to make an exit.

Yeah it's right there. Apparently boy babies get it. I thought the pus can sometimes drain itself? Like if you have one in your mouth your dentist can give you abx you don't normally need surgery for that? X

Ps ouch! Get well soon, sounds absolutely horrid xx

If there is no exit hole for the pus then it will just stay there. In my experience it either gets so huge that it bursts or it needs to be lanced. It won't be reabsorbed by the body as it is bacteria laden horrible stuff full of dead cells etc.

Wow I had never heard of baby boys having anal abscesses before? I wonder why that happens? And why boys?

And thanks...slowly recovering here :-).

No they applied numbing cream so i didnt hurt him and we just had to restrain him slightly but he didnt cause much of a fuss. Im not sure why it seems to happen to boys. They did say to us if it doesnt go he may need surgery but didnt explain exactly what that would entail but thankfully it never came back x

That's good that he didn't need surgery and it didn't come back.

We have done 2 full days of antibiotics now. It's definitely no bigger so that's something positive. Hopefully we are going to be able to avoid any other intervention. X

How is your little one now?

Thank you for asking :flower: he is fine. The abscess has not really changed a lot. It is a tiny bit bigger but not ballooned. The gp has given one more week of the same antibiotics. If that doesn't shift it then she will refer us to the hospital. She thinks it will be really simple for a paediatric surgeon to pop it. She said she would even do it herself if he was older but since he is so small she doesn't want to hurt him. She said if we put him in warm baths it might even pop itself but I'll be honest the past two days have been so manic I haven't had chance :-/ Tomorrow I think every time I change his nappy I'll get a warm flannel and sit him on it for a bit! He's got no pain etc so that's all fine. Xx

Ps my husband says it is actually peri-anal and he is a lower GI nurse specialist so he knows about this stuff! My mistake, I felt a bit of an idiot.

I know this is a bit different but my lo had one at a week old in her nappy area, it came out of nowhere and had to have antibiotics the same kind you have. It carried on getting bigger and more of a head rather than the spread out red lump it started out being at the beginning.
It burst after a warm Bath the day after we started the antibiotics which I just had to then keep clean and put a gauze over it.
It didn't fully drain at that point it wept for a few days and the antibiotics did the rest and it went within the week.
It's not returned as yet.
Xx

Oh and here is a pic of it ...

Yeah that's very similar looking! I'll get on with the warm baths! Ouch though, that looks very sore x

It was very sore, hot and red bless her, I hope those antibiotics work soon on your little babe.
Xx
