ANOTHER dog thread...

Shame that some rescues do not help themselves really.

our local one www.homes4dogs.co.uk

just had a look on there are alot of the same dogs still up from when we first started looking almost a year ago.

Just found a lovely playmate for roxy though  age says 2-4years but tbh she look syounger than roxy and roxy is not a year yet

Do you think they bother to update their website!? ... cos i found this with the Rspca's one and my local rescue centre... they have the same dogs/cats up for over a year ... i bet if you rang they would be long gone ..? x

dont know they have some new dogs on and have removed others i mean when i first looked i fell inlove with this poor staffie called skelly and his named fitted him well he looked like he had never eaten  but his hopfully found his home :happydance: the husky i looked at last year 1-1 1/2 age is still on with the same age though :dohh: Might ring up about a random dog and find out

haha yeah good idea!

also if ur going thru rspca they tend not to rehome dogs to families with children under the age of 4

With puppies they generally do though. :flower:

I don't have dogs but I used to look after a couple of young kids several years ago who owned 2 dalmatians. They were really hyper dogs, always jumping up and running around like maniacs. But friendly as anything, lots of licks and never any show of aggressiveness. I think with them the worst the could of done to the kiddies was knock them down while they were running around.

in my area even with puppies they wont adopt them to house holds with children under 4, dont have a clue why might just be the types of dogs they tend to get here

i suppose its just an extra precaution. quite shocked no-one on here actually owns a dalmatian! lol ... i thought they were quite popular dogs ?! x

seen one on our walks lol most men round here dont seem to want to be seen with anything other than:

Husky
GSD
staffie
Boxer

:dohh:

staffies are a general fave everywhere i think lol .. not to slag them off (cos i hear they can be lovely) ... but i think they are .... er not cute !!
i wonder why they are so popular, do you suppose there are just more of them :S ?! x

they used to be called the "nanny" dog since there are sooo good with children but them us nasty humans turnt some into nasty fighting machines so they got a bad rep..

So you have 2 types of people buying them really the chavy i want a hard dog init blud type lol

and the people who have reasearched into the nanny breed..

p.s no offence to anyone if you own one for none of the reason above :flower::flower:

EDIT::

and alot of staffies are breed by peopl ewho just buy a bitch and dog and dont bother to get one of them done so no checks ect just a £200 per pup in my pocket yay type of thing.

again no offence if you breed these type of dogs properly just from what i have seen and read

I knew a woman with 2 dalmatians, one of the poor dogs was riddled with health problems. He was born blind and deaf, plus he was developing athritus. His sister was boisterous when she wanted to be, though if this womans husband walked her, she was perfectly mannered.

I suppose you hear pro's and con's about all breeds but at the end of the day, I reccomend getting advice from people who either breed as a profession and aren't just BYB's or Puppy Mill breeders, because they are only doing it for the money. Unlike my mum who is breeding Schnauzers to breed out the health problems, and vets each and every potential buyer of a pup. She also makes sure that buyers are not intending on breeding our pups with others so as to keep the blood line clean. We also check up via email to make sure things are going ok and are on hand for advice on training, grooming and anything else owners need!

When I was a teen we had a mix breed dog from a abandoned-dogs shelter. He was still pretty young only 6 months old , he was a mix of German shepherd /collie, and terrier. as good as gold. At the shelter they would write in the description whether it is a dog suitable for kids or not :).

My friend has a dal bitch. She is leash aggressive with other dogs but a sweetheart with her family including their young baby. The only other dal I see around likes attacking my german shepherd and running wild but his owners are clueless about training or any type of dog management.

They are clever and energetic dogs. Long walks and 'thinking' games are a must.

It is great that you are going to see a breeder. Ask all the questions you can think of and expect questions back. Good breeders want to know where their pups will spend the rest of their lives.

Deafness, Urinary stones and epilepsy are the major health issues so ask the breeder about health checks on both parents and older generations.

Good luck!

I think alot of judgemental people here are part of the problem of the staffys reputation. They are one of the only breeds that the Kennel club would recommend to children.

rep is because some stupid idoit decided oo this dog looks hard i wonder if i can train it to fight hmmm lets see... and so they did and ended up in newspapers of "staffy attacks XXXX" "staffy bites child" ect

Int he adverts i seen for them for sale 1 in 30 will say do not bother to ring if you are under XX age as these dogs are not to be sold for fighting or status purposes they are being sold 100% for family dogs

I love my doggys but it is down to what you are comfortable with. The only small dogs I like are westies, the rest just look like rats to me (lol sorry) I was attacked age 5 by a lab who nearly blinded me for life. I can tolerate labs now as I know its deed not breed but I dont think I would own one just for that reason. I loveee great danes but I dont like Springers, I just think they look nasty (sorry anyone) I am just trying to explain we like different breeds like we all like different colours and foods. If we all had the same dog it would be really boring!

now...because I am biased and love my doggys :p

My dogs are not pets but part of the family, I believe that respect your dogs and they will respect you. The reason I like staffies is because they will settle to be part of the pact and not leader of the pack, I wouldn't like a dog that likes to be a leader. I know beagles need lots of pack walks too. That wouldn't fit our lifestyle. You need a dog that's right for you and your life.

I think staff's are obident and very easy to train. Back in the days when bull terriers were used for fighting, the injured dogs were kept with the family's and in prams with the children. No form of dog-human aggression was ever encouraged or allowed so its not something that is in there blood despite roumers.

My dog is currently going to be a pets as therapy dog. That makes me proud that she can help others :)

P.s Jack Russells are part of the same terrier family as staffies so many of their traits and ways will be the same.

sorry for the long post but I love my dogs :)

I love your post, I agree with everything you have said about each to their own etc, it is, just as you said, like peoples taste in food and drink etc. I love my Miniature Schnauzers, but then that's because I know alot about the breed...I know people with Staffies and Rotties who have no problems with them at all and are great with the kids. I am torn between getting a staffie, rotty and a mini schnauzer when my kids are a bit bigger (DD is only 4 months...got my hands full enough without a pup too!).

We have a 7 month old springer, personally I think they are great dogs, particularly with kids, but I'm a little bias as I grew up with them as my mum bred them as gun dogs

I have no issues with our pup interacting with small kids and our baby when it comes, hes well behaved and well disciplined, in no way is he alpha in our family - in fact he comes in well below me, DF and both the cats. He's already a star with friends kids.

I think a dog chosen for breed temperament, well trained and well exercised is a minimal threat.
I'd not go for a dalmatian or poodle to be honest, a nice cross such as a spoodle, or sprocker, lap/goldie or part bred terrier would be my choice.
I'm not a staffy fan but thats more because I've not really interacted with them - I have heard good things about them.

If the owners are realistic there is no reason a dog cannot be a trusted and valued member of the family; its about training and integration and discipline - if our pup EVER showed any aggression or dominance (to people or other dogs) I would have him pts.
Hes been trained not to from the beginning so any signs shown would indicate a temperament issue, it sounds harsh, but there is no place in my family for a untrustworthy dog.

we are going back to training soon since roxy little inident with her ear she has been being very cheeky.. So we are going to start her training all over again the good thing about the new training is its KC approved and ran my KC memebers/breeders/show dog owners who most of them train/show/jugde GSD's yay for me lol and we get a cert when done :)

you said a dog chosen for breed temperment, well trained and well exercised is a minimal threat... then you said .. but not a dalmatian or a poodle :S I'm confused by this, everyone keeps replying saying i wouldn't get a dalmatian but you didn't say why ? lol :P so frustrating ! everyone seems to hate them ... but yet no-one has one ?! ... x

ill try and do some search on them

its only number 10 on most danerous dogs my dog is number 3

I agree totally Emz ... my sister has a Staffy and I love him to bits - he's completely soppy and an absolute darling :D Your 2 are adorable btw :happydance:

I love dogs in general to be honest - but there are a lot of breeds that I love but wouldn't own ... not because of reputation or anything like that (I too believe in deed not breed), but just because they aren't quite me and I prefer smaller dogs. Jacks suit me because they are big dog characters in a little dog body :haha:

Here are my fur babies :)
