Another Scan?

Hey ladies. As most of you know, I was unable to find out the sex or even get a photo of my baby at my 20 week scan. I have a doctor's appointment booked for Dec 17th and was wondering if I could ask her if I could get another. Would we still be able to see the sex as I will be 23 weeks by then? I know, it's a silly question. But I'm not sure if there was a reason why they schedule the 20 week ultrasound between 18-20 weeks, and was wondering if it was possibly because it's harder to see after that with Bub growth and all. Again, I know it's a silly question... but do you think we'd still be able to find out?

I think they make it between 18 and 20 weeks because of other things they're looking for such as development problems and if there is one it's easier to abort it

They can still see the sex right the way until the end... But the only way you may be able to get another scan is if there was something wrong of you need an emergency scan.. IE measuring much larger for dates, or baby is in the wrong position etc...

You may have to look at possibly having a private scan if its so you can determine the sex.

Sorry to put a negative but I got the impression they wont offer any more scans etc unless they're necessary...

No harm in asking though x

*edit* And Toria you're right... Its easier for them to have a detailed look at bubs and make all the checks they need to at 20 weeks. Its much harder when you're further along as bubs starts to get bigger as theyre is not much room left.

I believe I may need another scan because at my last one, the baby was not head-down. I didn't think this to be a big issue until my other doctor said he would not deliver me if it was not head down (no epidurals at his hospital, too much of a risk if baby is breach).

I'm a little disappointed though if I can't get another... I think I'd have to travel four hours to the next city to get a private scan and most definitely will not do it in this winter weather.

Alot of babies dont actually move into head down position until the 7th - 8th month of pregnancy I beleive... Or so it says in the books I have read...

Good luck though at the doctors. Hope everything is ok for you.

If everything is OK and they wont offer another scan is it not possible to make a private sonographers come out to you hun ?? xx

*Edit* also if your baby is in breech position they can sometimes turn them around. It may be worth asking your doctor about it. X

He did mention that they are sometimes able to turn them. I think they give them a shot of adrenaline or something to make them move a lot. The sonographer did say that it may be okay that it wasn't head down yet, but normally it would be, it may just take some time. Apparently from my baby center newsletter, it should be there. I do feel quite a bit of kicking in that region, so I'm not all too concerned at all.

As for the sonographers coming down, I don't think they would do that. They are pretty lenient here though when it comes to ultrasounds, so maybe my doctor will be so kind... but I doubt it.

I won't be upset if I can't find out the sex, it will be a very pleasant surprise. I'm just a planner, so it's making it hard for me to plan! lol. I just need to hear the word "no" from my doctor saying I cannot get another ultrasound and I'll be fine with it. I don't mean to sound annoying or spoiled in any way, I'm just a bit curious is all. Thanks for answering my question ladies.

I think that might be when they start to engage rather than move into the head down position. Not quite sure.. lol. This pregnancy stuff is pretty technical.

hey hun. i doubt you will get another scan or less there is a problem with dates, measurments etc. maybe get a private scan done. we had a 4d scan done at 29wks and could still tell the sex... the sonographer did say after bout 30wks its a little harder to tell cos theres not much room left.

dont worry bout baby being head down yet... its still got alot of room to move round. it will prob start to be head down from bout 30wks when the space is more limited.... and i think MWs and doctors dont worry bout them being head down till your at least 36wks cos they can still turn right until labour.

engaging is when they are starting to get ready to come out... they can engage for many weeks before you actually have it. that happens about 34wks. (could be earlier or later or not until the birth!)

try to relax... am sure it will be a nice surprise at the birth.

Oh most definitely, I'm looking forward to the surprise. Just a bit curious about scans. If I can't find out, then that's the way the wind blows. I wouldn't dwell on something like this. Thanks for the feedback guys :)

Hey hon,

They *might* give you another scan because of your previous history. If it wasen't for that then they wouldn't, I know I asked with my son and they wouldn't. I'll be getting another U/S in a month or so to check for dialation because of my preterm labor but I decided to get 4D done too at 31 weeks and we'll be finding the sex out then. They guarantee it aswell, if you don't find out the sex at the appointment you get a free one done so you can. You might want to try that hon, its a bit pricey but I bet its pretty special when you go for one. Hope you get to find out :hugs:

I would say, there is no harm asking. When I went for my 20 week u/s they booked me at 16. The tech was very blah, I was very uncomfortable with him, and we weren't able to find out the sex. I mentioned it to my doctor, and it was both because I complained about it, and because they said they couldn't see part of baby well enough, since she was wiggling all over. But it was because I complained about it, and brought it up that they (I dunno...remembered??) to schedule another one. And we were able to find out at the next one at 20+3.

I would ask, since the worst they can say is no. Good luck hun, I'm a planner too, so I really wanted to know. =)

As your baby grows it does make it harder to see due to the size of the baby and the equipment they use, but at 23 weeks there should be no reason that they will not be able to see the sex. Whether you will get another scan or not, is another matter, they certainly wouldn't do one for you for that reason over here. x

No, and I'm not sure I'd want one done for that reason alone either. I'm trying to have as few scans as possible as I don't want to harm the baby in any way. My delivery doctor said he'd probably rather me have another to make sure the baby wasn't going to be breach a little further along, but as I had said, I think the baby is in a good position. I just wasn't sure if I could still find out the sex and whatnot if I had to go back in. Thanks a bunch, girls.
