So we have the "sparky" coming out on friday to change the Fuse board its sooo old it does not have trip switches or anything just the old style massive fuses, its getting done because one the kitchen soccets blew and sent the Oh flying, so LL is getting the board replaced because I told him that our next door who had this board also was told that its not longer fit for purpose/dangerous whatever..

But what im wondering is, is this a long job? and is it likely we will need wires ripping up and replacing? None of our upstairs soccets have switches on them so they are all constalty on. Just trying to see how disruptive friday is going to be for kyle and the dog

It'll probably take a half day with no problems. An hour or so to take the board out/off, then a few hours to fit the new one as it isn't a straight replacement. Each of the old circuits will need wired in but they shouldn't need to re-cable unless there is an issue with the existing cables. Then some testing to make sure that all the trips are working correctly. Have they done a pre-inspection?

FYI: You may also get a part P testing and inspection certificate, not completetly sure as I don't look after any domestic works. Keep this safe for the future.

cheers hun so i take it that means half a day with no electric ahh! best make sure the iphone/laptop is fully charged.. will keep kyle busy with painting/play doh etc

No pre-inspection but he just carried out the works on the next doors house which had all the same electric in it and no upgrades the same as ours, only difference is one of my plug soccets blew before the work is being carried out where as next door had, had no problems

DH is an electrical design engineer and says you will probably need to be re-wired because it sounds like none of your wiring is up to current regs for earthing so if an electrician does the board they will have to make sure everything is up to standard if that makes sense?

Thanks hun yeah that makes perfect sence tbh id rather it have to be re-wired and no its 100% safe than get a well it could do with replacing but its not urgent Iykwim? 2 of the soccets upstairs in 2weeks killed 4! mobile phones/there chargers bad times.. Well he should be here at 9 so an hour to get everyone fed and dressed and the dog carm

God yeah I would want the lot doing too rather than it keep killing everything - next time dh or someone might not be so lucky!!

Hope it all gets sorted for you hun xx

Well his been round to see which new fuseboard he needs however i get a feeling its not all as appears since he never new about the soccet blowing in the kitchen hmm not feeling to happy, its the only soccet in the kitchen not used for fridge/frezzer/washer and i wont touch it hmm

Once the new board is in it has to have trip switches on all the circuits to protect you (17th edition wiring regulations). The power will go off in 3/100 sec if there is a fault so you should be fine. It may trip other things in the kitchen if on the same circuit though. Hope your OH is OK!

Maybe ask him to change the sockets, even just the one in the kitchen. Shouldn't be too expensive and would put your mind at rest.

If you still have problems upstairs (though new fuseboard should sort it) you can get extension cords with surge protectors that cut out if the socket lets too much power through. Might be worth it, imagine if your laptop went!
