Because of my heart condition, my cardiologist wrote to my OB stating that I will need IV Lobetalol during labor and delivery. I was just wondering if anybody has had any experience with this? I know I need it to keep my own heart rate from getting out of control (I really don't want to go into SVT) but I'm wondering if it also brings baby's heart rate down or causes any other complications? I am trying to avoid c-section. Anyone out there done this before and what happened, anything you can tell me about it?

I have no first hand experience but I did find one study online that showed that even though labetalol does cross the placenta "There were no adverse effects of the drug on the infants and significant hypotension did not occur." Didn't say anything about heart rate though. Good luck, sounds like it isn't that uncommon.

I was on labetalol last pg and now this one. Its widely used in pg women to control bp.

I had labetalol but i had it for 1 week before baby was born as i had pre e and they wanted to try and bring down my blood pressure. The only side effect is that it may affect the ability for the baby to control their blood sugar levels. My little one ended up needing a few days in scbu. However my friend had the same thing and her baby was ok so i think i was just unlucky. Because your not having it for a prolonged period you should be fine. Hood lick with the birth x

I think the gain outweighs the risk which is really what it comes down to. If your BP and/or heart rate are out of control that can create worse adverse reactions for you baby than the medicine. My cardiologist is not recommending anything initially for my heart issues but I have not had any complications in 8 years. Should my heart act up at all I will do whatever the cardiologist says to gain control of my body and keep my baby calm.

I was on labetalol from 37 weeks in my first pregnancy due to pregnancy induced hypertension. DD was absolutely fine. Labetalol is safe to use in pregnancy and breastfeeding. I've been on labetalol again in this pregnancy for the past 8 weeks, as again I've developed pregnancy induced hypertension. Both me and baby are fine xx
