Any other small ones still?

My son was born only 5 weeks early but had trouble eating from the beginning, that's why he stayed in the NICU. He was big for being a preemie (7 lbs) I am a diabetic so that's why he was bigger. But now he is 18 months and tiny. 19 lbs 30.5 inches. Does this sound like its because of him being a preemie or does it sound like there is an underlying issue? His ped wants to see him back sooner than normal, so im concerned. He is 3rd percentile and went down a tiny bit last visit but was sick and not eating much for a few days before the appt I just don't know what to do he hates pediasure..

As long as he is gaining weight and not losing, I wouldn't worry too much. And losing a bit while sick is very normal. All 3 of my children are naturally small (between the 3rd and 10th percentile for weight). My twins were 6 weeks early and were about 17 and 18 pounds at 18 months old, 21 and 22 pounds at 2 years... They are healthy normal active children. My youngest is currently 17 months old (she was very very premature) and is 18 pounds right now.

hi hun, i didnt have a preemie but ds1 was a scbu baby (although not for long) as he was small (5lb 14oz). he was on the 2nd centile for a long time and there is no underlying issue for him.. hes just small and very very active. hes just moving to the next centile up at 4 years old. he weighed 26lb 2oz at his last weigh in. were back at the hospital on tuesday where he will be weighed again. As long as bubbs doesnt drop any more they should be fine hun. DS1 has dropped off the centiles a few times but only when hes ill and usually picks back up again pretty soon afterwards :hugs: xx

Thank you both! We will see at his next visit if he's dropped but I don't think he has. People always comment how small he is it makes me feel like I'm not giving him the right foods or something. .

I felt the same way about my twins. Everyone commented on how petite they were and thin my son looked. I obsessed about feeding them the 'right' foods and if they wouldn't eat, I worried sick. Our family doctor was so kind to me when I took them in to ask about it. She examined them (as they climbed on everything in her office) and then sat me down with their medical charts. She showed me that they had always been tiny so were not 'losing ground', pointed out that they were super active, happy, alert, had healthy skin color... told me that they would go through stages when they refuse to eat and that they would be just fine if they missed a few meals and advised me to stop letting other people's comments about them being too small for their age worry me because they were perfect. Now when people comment on how small they are, I just smile and say 'Yep, dynamite comes in small packages'.

Our neighbor girl is 18 months old and only 20 lbs. She was born full-term and is completely healthy. Some kiddos are just smaller! :)
