Hi There my son is 9weeks 4days old.
we are using tommee tippee closer to nature bottles & 2 days ago we switched from the slow flow teats to the variflow teats. he was getting on well yesterday & the day before on them. drinking a lot quicker, getting plenty of burps up and genuinlly seemed happier not having to work as hard to get the milk out.
only problem was sometimes when he was sucking too hard or fast the milk would come out the sides of his mouth so needed plenty of muslins to hand.

He was up at 4.30am last night (rare for him, he normally sleeps a bit longer)
and i gave him a bottle, he drank 3oz in about 5mins and then when burping him he threw up all over me & him. he didnt want anymore after that.

he had another bottle about 8am this morning same thing happend 3oz then threw up.

then a bottle about 12pm and he seemed ok that time, drank 4oz but kept acting like he was uncomfortable which he normally does when he has wind.
he leaked a bit of milk out the sides too.
he doesnt always leak a lot of milk out the sides at every feed just depends how hard or fast he sucks.

i don't know if it was the teats making him sick? but then he hasnt been sick at every feed and its strange for him to be sick 2 feeds in a row.
i asked oh if he thought it would be a bad idea to switch the teats and he said yes we should wait another few days see how he gets on. i guess i agree with him wouldnt wanna put him back on slow flow, id imagine it would be frustrating for him after having the variflow for 2days.

i have herd people saying after a few feeds their Lo got used to it and no probs.
what advice would you give me?
also is there a difference between variflow & medium flow?

thanks sorry its long.

Vari flow is a very fast flow it comes out as fast as he sucks so flooding him out (happened to my lo) i switched to medium flow and was fine didnt throw up anymore

Did your Lo throw up on the variflow too?
did the milk come out as fast with the medium flow as they did with the variflow?
how long did it take your Lo to get used to medium flow? and how old were your Lo when you switched to medium?

Yes cus vari flow if theyre sucking fast it comes out fast it comes out as fast as they suck. Medium flow came out slower, he got used to it within a day my lo was about 3 months when we moved from slow to medium cus he had quite a lot of wind with the faster flowing teats.

Some feeds are ok, some he gets it all over him and windy and sometimes sick but im guessing because those feeds he's wolfing it down? I'll per servere with it a couple more days to see if he gets used to it. if no better in couple of days i'll try the medium flow :) x

Yeah my son used to wolf it down on vari flow used to finish the bottle within 6 mins a 7oz bottle then when burping him half of it came up then i looked into it and was told vari flow was for older babies or thicker liquids.

hmm if its for older babies why do they tell you its suitable for newborns? :s xx

Because sometimes newborns are on special formula like staydown for reflux which a thicker liquid.

yeah i wouldnt give it to a newborn. ds has got on ok past couple of feeds he seems to be getting the hang of it but he keeps drinking smaller amount than normal and falling asleep.

I'm havin the exact same issues! On slow he was falling asleep and taking hours. Tried vari flow and was sicky and leaked out the corners of his mouth. Some bottles much faster (was taking 45 mins with slow) but most he just falls asleep and doesn't take full bottle!

Am getting really stressed about it :(

How long have you been using variflow boo?
this is day three for us and he is getting on much better (touch wood)
it can take a couple of days to get used to it but once baby is used to it its better. xx

I would defo recommend med flow vari is way too fast even for my toddler he coughs cus its too fast

ds is seems used to it now but if i start geeting probs i'll try them. but hes learned how to control the flow better now x
