In my maternity notes im down as high risk as i'm more prone to blood clotting and since finding out i was pregnant i have had to inject heparin daily and will do until birth just to make my blood thiner so it doesnt clot!

I hate reading that i'm "high risk" is anyone else also high risk in pregnancy?

I know it can be a number of things why woman are high risk in pregnancy, age/BMI/heart conditions/previous mc's/multiples/diabetes ect ect...

Be interesting to see if i'm not alone

x

Me too! I am high risk due to prior miscarriages. Tests showed a blood condition called lupus anticoagulant. I'm on low dose aspirin and also heparin injections for the duration too. It also means I will have to have extra scans towards the end (fingers crossed I make it that far). It sounds scary but being identified as high risk is the way they make sure that people who need more care get it.

That's interesting. I've previously had a DVT and had to take both heparin and warfarin to treat the clot. My midwife did mention at my first appointment that I might need to take asprin or heparin during the pregnancy but didn't say when. I wonder whether this might come up again at the 16 week appointment.

You might be signed off high risk further down your pregnancy. I was high risk with my first child due to lots of mcs. I had to see consultant weekly and scans every 2 weeks then I got signed off and then huge amounts of blood loss (3 weeks plus in hospital) then back onto high risk again for the rest of pregnancy. As I was monitored loads this showed my baby has hole in heart and kidney issues which I'm sure would not of been detected if I was low risk - but everything happens for a reason !!!!
Just be glad they are monitoring you loads but does a get a bit annoying going to hospital each week but at least you know your lo is safe !!!!

Hi ,

i am down as high risk under consultant care as my DD was underweight and i was induced as she had stopped growing however she was born healthy and is well just really small so they monitor me closer now
better to be high risk then no risk and problems occur without knowing.

good luck x

I'm high risk as my pregnancy is a result of IVF however I think whether that qualifies you as high risk may vary between PCTs. They also might monitor me due to a family history of thyroid issues according to the midwife (that came up at my booking in appointment) but we'll see.

I'm high risk due too previous losses xxx

umm im a type 1 diabetic, so they have to keep a close eye on the baby. every month i have to have a scan and then closer to the end every 2 weeks maybe due to problems like still birth etc.. so it worries me slightly i really have to take care of my blood glucose to ensure theyr not high. xx

thanks ladies it's interesting to see alot of you are high risk due to previous mc's!
I have had 2 mc's so that is prob another reason why i am down as high risk, but also when i had my blood tested after my 2nd mc it showed i am more prone to blood clotting (APS - antiphospholipid syndrome) which they think is why i had my previous losses. So i'm guessing with the mc's ive had in the past and also being on blood thinners with this pregnancy all contributes to being high risk. x

i am high risk and under consultant due to 'manual removal of 3rd stage' after my son was born 10 months ago. Lost 3000ml of blood and 3 units put back. Not looking forward to being straped to a monitor in labour again :nope: xx

I too am high risk due to an autoimmune liver condition, puts me at higher risk for pre-eclampsia and God forbid, liver failure. SCARY!!

Its good that your blood clotting thing has been picked up on in early pg... So it means you will be getting the correct treatment that is best for you and bubs...

I am high risk due to previous section and a stillbirth..... I know many a lady who have lost little ones at their end of their pg or in labour as the blood clotting thingy has gone undetected throughout their pg...

So sorry to hear about your little boy can i ask how did you lose him was it due to blood clotting? Thanks for your message.x

I'm high-risk because 1) I've had six miscarriages and 2) I'm ancient (40... will have just turned 41 when this baby is born).

Sorry to hear about all your mc's i have had 2 and it was so difficult to come to terms with and my heart goes out to you for suffering 6 sad losses. Have you had any tests/investigations into why you had your mc's? I had tests done after my second mc as i insisted and nagged my doctor which picked up my blood cotting disorder x

I feel like the poster child for high risk :/. I was diagnosed with antiphospholipid antibody syndrome with my last pregnancy--12 years ago! I was diagnosed after a suspicious triple screen at 16 weeks. My son was born at 29 weeks, very small for gestational age. He had a tumultuous ride in the NICU--110 days. He is non-verbal/autistic, and the biggest blessing in our lives. His two older brothers, ages 16 and 15, were born with no pregnancy complications.

So....here I am....pregnant and 40! We are super-excited, and so far....so good. I am 7 weeks along. We went to the regular OB last week for a scan--all looked normal. I visit the perinatologist on October 12th to develop the game plan for this pregnancy. I began taking the baby aspirin as soon as I saw the "+" line on the pregnancy test. I'm very anxious wondering if I'll have to do the heparin again. This APS is so confusing to me! I had only suffered one miscarriage prior to the pregnancy 12 years ago. I do not test positive for APS when I am not pregnant.

There is a section on this forum for gestational complications.....I posted a couple of questions over there, but only got a few responses.

Wishing you the best of luck with this pregnancy! Congratulations :D!!!!

I'm high risk because I suffer from pre-existing high blood pressure. I'm 11 + 2 weeks and so far the hospital has lost my consultant referal to discuss the medication I am currently on and have had to do another one which has so far put me back 3 weeks for seeing the consultant! Then to top it all no-one seems concerned about my high blood pressure so I went back to my GP who checked my blood pressure which was high (as usual) who has now asked me to get my blood pressure checked at the surgery at least once a week while the midwifes and consltant sort themselves out. I saw the nurse on friday and the bloods and urine the midwife took 2 and a half weeks ago have just vanished into thin air, so I dont know if I have protien in my urine or not. So I know have to get my bloods done again and wait AGAIN for the results, all while having high blood pressure and trying not to get stressed!!! So far I feel completely let down by the system so far and I certainly home things improve........

I too am high risk, medically more than obstetrically. I have spinal osteoarthritis and was on morphine prior to the pregnancy, birth is looking too risky and C section required. Got a referral today to see consultant. Baby is high risk from its dads medical history, so baby will be monitored more than most. They are also saying I may be obstetrically high risk too due to family history on my side and the potential for the baby to be large due to a giantism gene mutation its father may be carrying.

Hopefully will not have to wait long for consultant appointment.

I'm considered high risk because it's twins. I haven't seen a consultant yet though so interested to see how many extra appointments etc. I'm going to have to go to

I am considered high risk because I have had several preterm babies. My last son was born at 30 weeks. He was Born on March 12, 2011. He spent 3 1/2 weeks in NICU, he came home and after 2 1/2 days home he stopped breathing and passed away. I go to the doctor every week. One week to high risk doctor for scan and then the next week to my regular OB. I also get weekly injections of progesterone and at some point I will probably be put on procardia for preterm labor and if that doesn't help I will be in the hospital on magnesium.
