Anyone else switched to soy?

My 3 week old baby recently started straining alot while pooping and farting, and seemed to be in pain from gas after eating even though I burp him a lot. I switched him to soy last night and I think there is an improvement. What I'm worried about is that soy isn't as healthy for him and if its possible for me to use both soy and regular? Like soy for every other feed? Does anyone else do this? And how do I know if he is lactose intolerant? Could it be he just needed a different type of formula, not nessesarily soy? I'm going to call my pediatrician today and ask him if I should stick to soy or if he thinks thats too drastic a move just because a little fussiness and gas. Do any of your babies seem to have trouble digesting regular formula and what have you done that seems to work? Thanks for any advice! xx

My son is on soy and we will be switching him tomorrow (switched to soy by doctor recommendation but we don't think it was a milk allergy)

Soy formula's primary ingredient is corn syrup solids, which is just ugh! I would strongly recommend trying a different brand of regular formula first. I know you BF'd in the beginning, did you have dairy in your diet and did that affect his gas/tolerance?

Keep in mind that some of the gentle formulas for gas (ie Enfamil Gentlease) are also mainly corn syrup solids. About half of actual lactose intolerant babies are also allergic to soy, so keep that in mind too.

Good luck! Your LO might just be getting gassy from formula in general or even the way the bottle is being held/type of bottle.

Thanks for responding hun. Before I switched to soy I went out and bought Dr. Browns bottles because I heard they are better for gas. When that didnt work I figured I'd try out soy. He's actually doing really well on it today and hasnt been fussy or straining like he's in pain like he usually does after eating. but I dont want to fully feed him only soy, I dont think soy formula is very healthy at all. When I was BFing I have no idea if dairy affected his gas because honestly he screamed the entire 2 weeks no matter what I did (I think he was starving) Anyways I guess I'll talk to the doctor about what I can do..

Well, important thing is that he is doing well, that's all that really matters. I'm not impressed with soy being corn syrup solids either but in the end, if baby is happy, that's what is important. Mine screamed 24/7 with colic until 8 weeks. As long as we make healthy choices for LO after weaning begins I don't think I'll be too worried about using soy!
