Hey...so I wanted to ask for others experiences here because I find that the techs don't really go out of their way to explain things very well for this test. I had no clue what I was walking into yesterday when I went for this thing I figured would be super easy. No idea there was a pass and fail and that I could be sent to the hospital!!!
I went for my ultrasound first. My son is 32w + 2 and he is a mover!! She said he looked really good on the ultrasound but she was looking for the breathing movements and he was not settled down enough that she could see so after 20 minutes we go into the room for NST and they hook me up. Because of all his moving it was hard to find him on the monitor...and I had to hold it myself at a funny angle and press hard. His heart rate was around 145 most of the test...and I saw it several times move up into the 160-170 range, but the problem was usually after that happened we'd lose him on the monitor because he was moving so much. They never got what they "wanted to see" and she mentioned that the doctor has sent people to the hospital or had them come back.
They eventually sent me back into ultrasound...and within 5 seconds there he was, practicing his breathing like a champ. "Ok, you're good to go, see you next week!" Things went from omg to, see you later so fast.
Anybody else ever had a similar experience? No doctor comes in so nobody told me what a failed NST could mean for my baby...is there some reason he did not pass it? Google is really bad in these cases and I read where one woman had a similar thing where baby WAS active but the heart rate did not stay elevated and they were worried about brain damage so of course that made me freak out a bit. The tech just told me to eat something closer to appointment time next time...I'm just sort of confused because it was not a lack of movement that failed him at all...he was pushing and kicking back at that monitor thing pretty hard. Those spikes that I saw right before we lost signal a couple times...does that mean he's just fine but the machine was having trouble keeping him on there? I am really starting to hate all the technology....I am doing this because of gestational diabetes but I am diet controlled and never have bad numbers. I told my husband we better get that bag packed because now every Wednesday I have to worry that they are going to send me to the hospital!
