Hey...so I wanted to ask for others experiences here because I find that the techs don't really go out of their way to explain things very well for this test. I had no clue what I was walking into yesterday when I went for this thing I figured would be super easy. No idea there was a pass and fail and that I could be sent to the hospital!!!

I went for my ultrasound first. My son is 32w + 2 and he is a mover!! She said he looked really good on the ultrasound but she was looking for the breathing movements and he was not settled down enough that she could see so after 20 minutes we go into the room for NST and they hook me up. Because of all his moving it was hard to find him on the monitor...and I had to hold it myself at a funny angle and press hard. His heart rate was around 145 most of the test...and I saw it several times move up into the 160-170 range, but the problem was usually after that happened we'd lose him on the monitor because he was moving so much. They never got what they "wanted to see" and she mentioned that the doctor has sent people to the hospital or had them come back.

They eventually sent me back into ultrasound...and within 5 seconds there he was, practicing his breathing like a champ. "Ok, you're good to go, see you next week!" Things went from omg to, see you later so fast.

Anybody else ever had a similar experience? No doctor comes in so nobody told me what a failed NST could mean for my baby...is there some reason he did not pass it? Google is really bad in these cases and I read where one woman had a similar thing where baby WAS active but the heart rate did not stay elevated and they were worried about brain damage so of course that made me freak out a bit. The tech just told me to eat something closer to appointment time next time...I'm just sort of confused because it was not a lack of movement that failed him at all...he was pushing and kicking back at that monitor thing pretty hard. Those spikes that I saw right before we lost signal a couple times...does that mean he's just fine but the machine was having trouble keeping him on there? I am really starting to hate all the technology....I am doing this because of gestational diabetes but I am diet controlled and never have bad numbers. I told my husband we better get that bag packed because now every Wednesday I have to worry that they are going to send me to the hospital! :nope:

Yes, I'm type 2 diabetic and did weekly ultrasounds and nonstress tests with my last pregnancy (she's now 14 months old) and I'm 21 weeks pregnant and will be doing them again starting at 32 weeks with this baby. So, basically there are 5 points they look for on those things but in case I give you any inaccurate information I'm going to recommend you read this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biophysical_profile

I failed my profiles with my 14 month old at 34 weeks and they delivered her early but it wasn't a decision they made in one day. I went back 4 days in a row and it was the nonstress test that she failed more than anything. It wasn't because she moved around too much. It was because she didn't move much at all. They want to see their heart rate going up and down several times but hers was a flat line most of the time. Moving around too much is a very good thing and I believe in your case when they said "they didn't see what they wanted to see" (not sure if I quoted that right but hope I got the gist of it) that's literally what they meant - He was moving too much for them to see what they need to see to give you the points .

But if you do eventually fail maybe it would help your nervousness to know that my daughter was 5lbs 4 oz and perfect. She was in the NICU for 2 weeks as she had some trouble with feeding and they had to keep an eye on her breathing but by the time she was ready to go home she was no different than any other newborn - She just needed to bake a little longer.

You're in good company, lots of us here have those profiles to pass too! Take care and try not to worry *hugs*

Thanks so much :) I need to just relax about it I guess. I had a doctors appointment yesterday and even though I felt him kicking they could not find his heartbeat so they put me on the ultrasound there too...I see him so often because he is a squirmy uncooperative guy LOL. He was 4 pounds 1 ounce at 31w + 4 so he is doing well. I guess just the idea of him coming so soon is stressful...but I am doing everything to get ready and get the rest of the stuff we need for him...just had the baby shower last weekend!
