Hi girls,

I’m getting a private reassurance scan Wedn, a day before I turn 10 weeks (bit paranoid after several rounds of IVF!). Anyone else had one around this time and did you end up needing an internal scan? It said on the notice it might end up being one at this earlyish stage. Just trying to figure out the likeliness!

Also, I need to drink a pint of water an hour beforehand. Does this mean I should down a pint an hour before (like guzzle it), or gradually sip that pint through the hour leading up to the scan?

Thanks! x

I had a scan at 7 weeks and they did an external one. I was able to see the heart beating but wasnt able to hear it as it was too early. Unless you want an internal I dont see why you would have to have one.

However this is my first pregnancy so someone else may have a much better answer for you :)

As for the water, I drank it all an hour before and I almost peed myself! Good luck!

I've had a scan every week since week 5, all have been internal. My dr wont do external until 12 weeks

I have had 3 scans since I was around 5 weeks, all of mine have been internal. I'm hoping when I meet with my OBGYN the next scan will finally be an external :haha: They're not that bad, but it will be a nice change. Good luck!

I had an external scan at 9 weeks because of some bleeding. Saw everything perfectly. If they are telling you to drink water, then they are going to do an external first at least, because you need an empty bladder with an internal.

I am going for my 9 week in 2 hours!!!!!! I plan on drinking gradually within the preceding hour.

FX for us!

I go in for a 9 week dating scan in about 4.5 hours. I'm hoping for an external scan as my scan at 6 weeks was internal. It doesn't help that my doctor basically turns my chair upside down! lol... more awkward than a pap!

I am much more paranoid with this pregnancy since being diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy after having my daughter. Cant wait to see the baby. It is the only thing that gives me some relief!

I had scans at 6+3, 8+3, and 10+2 they were all internal. My NT was external at 12+2. My doctor does internal anytime before 14 weeks. I never thought the internals were bad, they never bothered me

i had my first scan at 9+1. it was external and we were able to see and hear babys HB. When they say to drink water they mean gradually so your bladder has time to fill. Goodluck

I had a scan at 7,9 and 10 weeks and they were all external. My bladder was empty at the 10 week scan because i wasn't expecting to be scanned but we still saw baby wriggling. All the best on Wednesday.

Update - I had my 9+1 on Monday - SO uncomfortable, painful actually with the bladder. I couldn't relax my abdomen. But beb was measuring on date and saw and heard the hb - so incredible - I bawled!!!! :')
Saw doc after and she wanted to do internal swabs but I wanted to wait until after 12 weeks and she was ok with that.
I asked if the baby shouldn't be moving a bit and she started bouncing the transmitter on my bladder - so brutal! But later beb started squirming around and being such a little love <3 Best of luck tomorrow!

I had scans at 6, 8 and 10 weeks and all of these were transvaginal. They did an abdominal scan only during my 12 week NT scan. If going for abdominal scan, drink 2 glasses of water just 30 mins before your appointment and that will do.

Mine is an IVF baby too I had a scan at 9+1 - they did a vaginal because not enough water in bladder - its on my avatar
Wasn't painful, very re assuring. Good luck on yours!!

<3 Your avatar pic looks EXACTLY like my son's 9 week ultrasound <3
*sigh* :) I can't wait to get a good scan of this little bub

i had a reassurance scan at 10+5 - the sonographer did an external scan and when he seen everything was ok he asked if i would have an internal scan to get better pictures cos it was difficult to see anything

it wasn't as uncomfortable as i thought and as soon as i saw my baby i forgot what was happening down there anyway!

hope everything goes well xx

Funny you should say that, everyone's predicting me a boy :D Will find out in 3 weeks haha my second scan was normal and not so clear :dohh:

Just to let you all know, had my scan yesterday, was just amazing, little snuggler was kicking its little arms and legs about and was so wonderful!

Anyway, it was an external, saw it right away and my bladder was perfectly full after sipping a pint of water an hour before.

That's great Tirxie!! glad all went well!!
