hi
so im expecting my first baby, and i i really am expecting it to be an absolute nightmare (labour and birth that is) im 34 weeks now and i want my baby here so much but all i can think about is how hard and painful labour is going to be. im oppting for a water birth all being well.
my sister tells me of her labour with her daughter and it was absolutely hurrendous for her really long and slow.. we are similar size shape and build and obviously we are sisters.. do u think this may mean my labour will be similar? and are there any things i can d to speed labour along or anything i can do now to help labour be easier? if anyone has anything to share please do

xxxxx
Me! I did

I had a completely pain free and drug free labour and home birth using Natal Hypnotherapy and a birth pool. Birth story link in my siggy if you're interested.
Studies have shown that perception of pain in labour is closely linked to your expectations before labour (i.e. if you expect labour to be excruciating, you will tend to perceive it as excruciating). So, start reading those positive stories now, and let the negative ones go. And whilst you're at it, start thinking positive thoughts, it will get you into a better mindset for the journey ahead. So, instead of thinking about "how hard and painful labour is going to be. im oppting for a water birth all being well." Shift it round in your head. "I am preparing for a waterbirth, as I know water will help me to cope in labour".

Subtle changes can make all the difference.
You sister's experience will not be yours, that's a guaranteed fact, as all women labour differently, and by asking for advice to make labour easier you are straight away likely to be doing things differently.
Keep active in labour, and wherever possible, upright - no point in working against gravity, it will always win

, or on all fours. If you must lie down, then lie on your side, not your back. Lying on your back can close your pelvis up hugely (not good when your body is pushing your baby through the space), and means you have to push your baby up and over your coxis (tail bone). Other positions mean it will flex out of the way to make more room for baby.
Don't be in too much of a hurry to get to the hospital/birth centre, as labouring in your own environment is much better - you will be more relaxed and able to listen to what your body is telling you to do. As they say in the Natal Hypnotherapy book - if someone takes your pic and you're grinning like a cheshire cat, then it's too early to go in

Take with a pinch of salt (I mean, I was smiling right at the end of my labour), but you get the drift of it.
You can have a good birth experience, and its not about how you achieve it. It's about you staying calm, focused and in control, whatever happens.
