I am at my wits end with finding a good formula for my baby. He has silent reflux and is on losec (prilosec). He is only taking 90-100ml of formula 6 times per day. He drinks 40ml then turns his head away and i can usually distract him to drink a bit more but once he hits 90-100ml he closes his mouth and cries if i try to give him anymore. He is 5 months so should be taking a decent amount of milk by now.

Would an AR formula help to stop the milk coming up his throat while feeding as i think that may be what is botheringhim. Because he acts hungry and i hear his tummy growling but he gets upset after a small amount of milk.

We have tried regular formula, sensitive formula, Elecare which is like Neocate which he hates so much that he refuses to drink it and if he does drink it he gags on the taste and projectile vomits. We have tried AR once when he was 8 weeks old but he got badly constipated, this time i would be using a brand that is highly recommended and hopefully his digestive system can handle it better.

Any advice please

I use the similac version of the AR and my baby does well on it. She still vomits if i burp her too roughly or move her after she eats but it's a hell of a lot better than on regular formula. I will take the once a day spit up over the 10 times a day ... Lol
Oh and my baby can't handle any Enfamil products I'm not sure why but she can only do similac it's weird.

ETA- a little water usually helps my LO go potty. Usually like an oz or so in between feeds. I've heard that an ounce of prune juice mixed with an ounce of water helps too but I'm reluctant to give that too her because she's so little but I'm sure your baby would be fine since she's older but that's totally up to you.

I have always been told that the rule with reflux is smaller feeds more often. For example my dd is 3.5 months and eats 2 ounces every two hours. If I try to feed her more she will eat it but it all comes back up anyway. We tried the ar formula and saw no difference. We went to the soy and she has less air in her tummy and doesn't cry as much. If your baby is turning away at 40 I would quit then as they are trying to tell you that is all they can handle. It sucks as you are feeding them more but its better than a screaming vomiting baby.

Omar was on Aptamil AR with dr browns bottles. I used to feed him on a high pillow to keep his upper body upright as much as I can. His average was 20-24 oz at that age & he never went for more than 24 oz. he used to drink 5-6 oz 4 times a day.

At 6+ months, once he's weaned he doesn't need more than 18-21 oz with 3 small solids xx

Slightly ot but how does lo wind? My ds has silent reflux and is very windy so we feel like we fight a losing battle, reflux gets better wind worse and visa versa! Reason I mention this though is that when he's mega windy his tummy growls like mad. Last night for instance we struggled 3oz in him despite him being hungry and desperate for it. We spent 40 mins feeding and mainly burping him. We lost count at 11 burps. And I mean we too, I winded him till my arm ached and dh had to take over, then I took back over from him later. Wasn't fun!

Thanks for all the advice. He can definately handle bigger feeds and he doesn't vomit as he has drunk up to 200mls for several days at a time when his silent reflux is under control. It is just a matter of keeping it under control.

I have been told to put him back on his prescription formula as his eczema has flared up again since having dairy formula. So i am trying to wean him onto it gradually as he hates the taste and refuses to drink it.
