Hi all,

just really looking for a bit of infomation and wondered if any one had heard of or had a chemical pregnancy??

I have had 4 M/C now within the last 4 years and everytime we have been to have an early scan they always say the same thing!!! ( there is nothing in your uterus!) I have never had a scan where I have actually seen anything but my Hcg levels are always high and they take ages to come down so I was just wondering if anyone had any info as Im going to see M/C specialist and want to armed with loads of questions I can't go own like this for much longer!!!!!!:cry:

Ive heard of them,
Wobbles may be able to give you some info, she had a few.

Yer have a read of Wobbles journal i think they were mentioned in there

Hi hun, found this info on chemical pregnancies x

chemical pregnancy is the term given to a pregnancy that ends very early in the first trimester. Chemical pregnancies are confirmed by testing for hCG, the hormones that indicate the presence of a pregnancy. These hormones are typically detected by a urine or blood pregnancy test. However, within weeks, these hCG levels begin to drop rapidly, signifying an end to the pregnancy. As a result, your baby and his amniotic sac cannot be seen on an ultrasound and a miscarriage takes place.
It is believed that chemical pregnancies occur when the fetus dies immediately after conception. This happens before the embryo has a chance to implant in your uterus where it can grow and develop. Like a stillbirth or molar pregnancy, chemical pregnancies can be very upsetting for the couple involved.

How Common is a Chemical Pregnancy?
Unfortunately, chemical pregnancies are actually quite common. In fact, between 50% and 60% of all first-time pregnancies are thought to end in miscarriage. A large majority of these can be attributed to chemical pregnancies.

When it comes to chemical pregnancies, many women don’t even realize that they have experienced one. This is because the vast majority of these miscarriages occur within the initial six weeks of pregnancy. During this time, typical signs of pregnancy are not always present just yet and a missed period may not have happened yet, making it somewhat unlikely for most women to take a pregnancy test. As a result, many women don’t even know that they were pregnant in the first place.
However, because pregnancy tests are becoming increasingly sensitive, it is now possible for women to detect pregnancy up to 3 days before their period is due. As a result, more and more women are able to recognize their pregnancies ahead of time, making it more likely that women will detect a chemical pregnancy.

What Causes a Chemical Pregnancy?
The causes of a chemical pregnancy are often difficult to determine, however, there are a few common causes:

 • Chromosome Abnormality: Chromosomal abnormality is by far the most common cause for chemical pregnancies. These abnormalities are present at the time of conception, and prevent the baby from forming properly. As a result, the body miscarries the baby.
 • Uterine Abnormalities: Abnormalities in the uterus, such as the presence of uterine fibroids, can interfere with implantation, leading to a chemical pregnancy.
 • Hormonal Deficiency: Women with luteal phase defects and other hormone deficiencies have difficulty maintaining a pregnancy due to a lack of hormones. As a result, the body experiences a miscarriage.
Symptoms of a Chemical Pregnancy

For some women, a chemical pregnancy causes no external signs of pregnancy. The only real sign of a chemical pregnancy is rising hCG levels. For this reason, many women don’t even recognize that they may be experiencing a chemical pregnancy or miscarriage.
Women who have experienced a pregnancy before, may recognise typical pregnancy symptoms including:

 • breast tenderness
 • morning sickness and nausea
 • fatigue
These physical symptoms disappear by the sixth week of pregnancy and your period begins. Your period may include the following symptoms:
 • small clots in the blood
 • increased amounts of blood
 • more severe cramping

Diagnosis of a Chemical Pregnancy

Chemical pregnancies are primarily diagnosed through pregnancy blood tests. Throughout pregnancy, your health care provider will monitor your hCG levels to ensure that your pregnancy is moving along smoothly. If your health care provider notices a sudden lowering in your hCG levels, this may signal a miscarriage.

In order to diagnose a chemical pregnancy, you will be given a few hCG tests. After completion of a number of hCG tests, you will likely be receive an ultrasound. This ultrasound will be able to pick up any signs of life in the uterus. With a chemical pregnancy, no implantation of an embryo will be seen and no heartbeat will be heard.

Treating Chemical Pregnancy

Because the vast majority of chemical pregnancies go unnoticed, there are relatively few people who undergo treatment for the condition. Instead, most of these women go on to experience healthy, full-term babies in the future.

If you know that you are experiencing a chemical pregnancy it is a good idea to visit with your local heath care provider. It is important that your health care provider keeps an eye on your hCG levels. If you your hCG levels do not continue to decline, it is possible that a miscarriage will not take place, leading to possible health complications. For this reason, frequent monitoring by your health care provider will be necessary for a few months after a chemical pregnancy.
Women who are found to have specific causes for their chemical pregnancies may receive certain treatments in order to increase the chances of pregnancy. Common treatments include:

 • fibroid surgery
 • hormones
 • baby aspirin
What About the Future?
The vast majority of women who experience a chemical pregnancy go on to have happy and healthy pregnancies in the future.. In fact, the chances of experiencing multiple chemical pregnancies are quite slim. However, if you have suffered from two or more chemical pregnancies, it could be a sign of an underlying reproductive problem, so be sure to consult with your health care provider or reproductive specialist.

Hi Wobbles,

And thank you for all that info Jo!:hugs:

Well I started TTC in june 04 fell in the first month and M/C in the August, went for internal US and there was nothing in my uterus hgc levels were high , but coming down slowly!!

took ages to get cycle back on track but then fell again in March 05 and M/C in May , went for internal US and they could see nothing , again hgc levels were coming down slowly!!

DH left me as I had now lost the plot and was baby obessed in Oct 05.

Still nothing to be done by the doctors because we had ONLY had 2 M/C!!

Had councelling with DH and we worked everything out and are now more in love than ever but decided we needed a bit of us time so we stopped trying.

Moved house fresh start evryting going really well then in fell again in Nov 06, and then had an ectopic in dec/jan 07 never felt pain like it!!! so now we were told that we could see someone (how lovely of them) we saw our consultant in the April 07 and she ran lots of tests and said that everything was normal and there was no link in any of the pregnancies and that we were Just UNLUCKY!!!!!

So we kept trying and I fell agin in Sept 07 and M/C in Oct they are still checking levels of hgc now and they are going down slowly again!!

Now sorry about all that ramble but do you read that I think UNLUCKY or do you think SOMETHING wrong!!!

I'm so frustrated i didn't and don't know what to do with myself they have now said that I can go a see a M/C specialist at the end of Nov 07 and thats who I thought I had seen before!!!:hissy::hissy::hissy::hissy:

just really stuck and don't know what to do next!!!

Chemical pregnancies usually go unnoticed because a bleed will start around the day your period is due sometimes a lil later being confused as a late period. Sounds like you have had missed miscarriages and did not bleed around the date AF was due ... poss not even until your hcg was back to a normal level. Chemical pregnancies will s how positive if you test at the right time but with me stay faint and decline pretty quickly because it didn't go up much in first place. Example is I tested once on say a Monday had pregnant on a digi then 2 days later it was not pregnant on a digi.

How me and my OH coped is beyond me. he didn't know how to cope with me I didn't know how to cope with the obsession because its an easy trap when you experience losses - takes over your life :( Glad to see you came through the harder times and started again.

I take it consultant did some blood tests ... anything else? See we had the standard blood tests then fobbed off yet we knew there were so many more options, tests, possibilities etc. I think unlucky could be one way of putting it but in my eyes not very sensitive!! Have you had any advice what to do when you get a BFP? Like immediately go and see them??

Sometimes you have to tell these stupid people what you want & think! Thats my experience of the good NHS! :|

Hi wobbles:hi:

Thanks for getting back to me it is reall frustrating that I can't get any straight answers!!!
I starting bleeding light last wednesday I was 6weeks tothe day, went straight down to the EPU as Im now classed as a high isk pregnancy I had an early scan booked in for 7weeks which I didn't get to because at the EPU they sent me to have internal US where there was nothing in me uterus then on then they took blood to check hgc levels and told me they would ring me with the results they rang at 3pm said they were 3294 and I would need to come back friday for another blood test did that and they were down to 2976,
So I had to go back it today a week later and it was 1978 so got to go back next friday for another blood test.
So my questions are .....

Should it still be that high?
why do you think we never get to see anything ?
What is a missed M/C?
and why is it they wont discuss different possiblities with me they just keep fobbing me off I don't know what to do next!!

What sort of questions do you think I should be asking the M/C specialist when we go and see himat the end of Nov?

Sorry for rambling but noone else seems to understand!!!!:hissy:

So heartbreaking but your levels are declining - 1000 drop on the last result. Sounds like your bleed had left no trace sometimes I think i found it easier that there was never anything on the ultra sound ... if you know what I mean? A concern with yoru levels would be if they were static or not declining at all.

A missed miscarriage is one that doesn't continue to grow but no bleeding occurs or you have had some spotting not actual heavy bleeding. I believe a lot of details about this kind of miscarriage are unknown.

Do you have a consultant? If you don't you need one if you do you need to change them they obviously not doing their job or you any deserved care if the possibilities are not being discussed.

Ask the consultant what tests have been done - write it down
ask what other tests can be done
ask about internal tests & scans not just blood tests
ask about the possibility of immune problems, progrestrone (sp), hcg ....
ask what will be done the next tim eyou get a + on a pg test, do you contact them straight away (answer should be yes), will they repeat these blood tests whist pregnant because the resuts can differ when your pregnant (like the lupus test & any results that could mean you need blood thinners during a pregnancy).

Ask him/her what they are planning to do about it basically (be blunt) - what is your plan of care!

:D x

Thanks Wobble I have written all that down in my special TTC diary notes and will pull it out with vengence when I get my apponitment through!!!

I will let you know when it is ( end of Nov) until then I will have to sit tight wait for levels to return to normal and wait for me first proper AF since M/C.

At least I have you guys to talk to until then, thanks again you have been great!!!

HEy Tricks -please, make sure to ask for a full hormaone test. make sure they test you for prolactin levels and progesterone levels.

Insist on a prolactin hormone test. Many pregnancies such as you describe are lost because because of high prolactin levels.

You want to at least rule it out!!

Thanks for that another one to put in my TTC diary to take to appointment !!

This consultant isn't going to know what hit him!!!

Great. I say that because I lived in the UK for 7 years and had mioscarriages - it was only after I moved (am now living in another country) that I heard of high prolactin levels causing miscarriages. In fact it was the first thing the GYN sent me to the lab to test for when I told him my history. He was shocked no one ahd ever tested me for this. It came back - SKY HIGH!!!!! Now I am on drugs to reduce which would make my lining more receptive to a pregnancy should an egg be fertilised.

You may not have this at all - but after 4 miscarriages - you want to rule it out.

Hi All

this is my first time using chat websites and am totally new to the whole concept. I have been reading your comments and am hoping someone will be able to shed some light on my situation.

I was "pregnant" for the first time and miscarried last week at 6wks 3 days. I have had blood tests done and they were always around the 500/600 mark. I did have another one done last Thursday, after having bled with miscarriage all week, and the results come back at 2026! My midwife is now treating me as "pregnant" although it looks like I have miscarried. I have had scans done at 5 and 6 weeks which showed up nothing.

Has anyone heard or experienced this before?

Thanks

Hi Smilert

How many hCG tests have you had done over a week? How many days between the 500/600 result and the over 2000?

When will they rescan?

Only time my levels went up and there was no viable pregnancy was with our ectopic but the results were nowhere near 1000 never mind 2 and slowly rised over a couple of weeks & stay static.

What makes you say you miscarried? A bleed? Scan - if a scan how many weeks were you at the scan?

Woobles

thank you so so much for coming back to me :) I had my first scan at 5 weeks on 12th October and my second scan on 19th October at 6 weeks and nothing showed on either scan! I have had blood tests done on 11th Oct (419), 13th Oct (563), 17th Oct (644) and 19th Oct (543 and told I would prob miscarry). I did start bleeding on 21st Oct and have bled since then but has gradually got less and less. I had my last blood test done on 25th Oct and results come back 2026! Hence midwife said that she is still treating me as pregnant!

I am so totally confused as I've never been pregnant or miscarried before. My sister-in-law did mention that it could possibly be that I have conceived twins and miscarried one, but I would have thought they would have been able to see something on scan.

Have you ever heard of this?

Thanks again for coming back to me - it is so good to chat with someone who knows what you are going through :)

Sorry

forgot to say that I am having another scan tomorrow. Im worried that the 2026 should have been more 200 and perhaps they have miskeyed it!

Also congrats to you on your bump - when is your baby due?

Well if they made a mistake with 200 & 2000 thats stupidly bad never would surprise me but all the same unlikely.

Your slow rising hCG doesn't look good but then that sudden leap could be good news - your sister may be right.

The only time I have experienced results like yours was as I said the ectopic but nothing close to your leap I don't think mine went over or much over 500 in 2 weeks (something like that) and when they started declining was declining between 100/150 each blood count. They should really have repeated that blood test on the 27th (2 days from last blood count).

Good luck tomorrow - I hope they see bean. If they do ask them for your own information why they think the slow rising along with one count declining may have happened and if they are concerned about it.

An thank you - Shes due 20th December :D

Thank you so much, will let you know on Wednesday what's happening. I am so hoping that we do see a little sac and egg tomorrow - would be fantastic :)

*Fingers formly crossed*

Keep your mind busy, some comfort munchies & cuddles tonight with your other half & an early night.
