If so is there anything we can do to try and increase our chances of not having one or is it simply down to luck - or lack of?

I was induced with DS as my waters went and 24 hours later no contractions. I didn't have to have the pessary as I was 2cm's dilated, instead straight onto the drip which i HATED!!!!

The contractions were unbareable (to me!) and although I tried gas and air In the end I had to have the injection which looking back yes took most of the pain away but also made me feel very out of it!!!

6 hours later it was time to push and man alive it killed but hey, it was never going to be fun!

Just wondering if my chances of this happening again are higher based on the history or could I be looking at a completely different labour?

Thanks for reading!!

I was induced with my first which ended in c section (I think it would have whether or not I was induced though).

I have no idea what I want to do about pain management, but since I never felt a contraction with DD, I want to know my options but take it as it comes and decide then. I had everything too planned out with DD (which none of it happened), so while I may have ideas of what I'd like to do/have, I'm pretty much going to take it as it comes and make my decisions along the way. I'm a vbac hopeful, so I really don't know what to expect out of this.

I don't think once an induction, always an induction unless there's a medical reason behind the induction. I think each pregnancy is different with the possibility of going on your own, just like being over due with one doesn't mean you'll be over due with the next.

I'm sure you can try natural "labor inducing" things, but I truly believe that even with that, the body will go when it's ready. With DD, nothing I tried worked (walks, ball, EPO/RLT - not that those help induce, but possibly help "prepare", pineapple, "labor inducing" smoothie and cookies :laugh2:, sex, orgasms, clarey (sp?) sage oil, etc).

So I think it's just different with each pregnancy and when your body is ready to do it (I was 3-4 cm dilated and 100% effaced by the time of induction at 41+6 - kid just didn't want to come out).

I'd love to not be induced this time. My active labour (5-10cm) was over 24 hours and I was hooked to machines for all of it. I just can't imagine natural labour being worse.

I tried everything to get going. Nothing worked.

Good question b/c it sounds like we had the same labor. My water broke at 4 am and I had no contractions. By 11 am they put me on pitocin, which was hell! So painful with contractions every 2 minutes I begged for an epidural after about 6 hrs. I was so exhausted from being up so early and I never did properly rest. My DD finally arrived about 25 hrs later from my water breaking and thankfully I only had to push for 20 mins before she popped out.

I'm praying for a more natural birth but it's so unknown. I don't know why I never contracted on my own but I'm thankful it didn't end in c-section. It'll be interesting to see what happens this time around!

My mothers first labour was just like mine. Induced because post dates, just over 24 hours. Her second and my sisters first were 5&1/2 hours from 1st contraction to baby, around 40 weeks. My mum says her natural labour was 10 times easier.

Might be worth asking your doctor whether the situation is likely to recur? My reasons for being induced were different, I was two weeks late. My second was born naturally but he still took his time and came 13 days late. Much better birth.

I was induced with my first and felt completely traumatised by the whole experience (26 hours of it) I'm really hoping to go into labour naturally this time round. No drips at all x

I was induced with DS due to being nearly 2 weeks overdue. I'm really hoping to avoid induction this time as I just found it really hard going.

I'd had a couple of stretch and sweeps over the previous 10 days or so, which didn't do anything. I ended up being induced at 41+4 using prostaglandin gel on the cervix, then 6 hours later (once contractions had started) having my waters broken and then the drip started basically immediately after that. I don't believe I needed the drip as my contractions were already getting going on their own, but that is the procedure of the hospital I was at. I was hooked up to monitors the whole time, which meant only limited movement, and then got an epidural several hours into active labour as the contractions were so intense and almost on top of each other. So then I was completely bed ridden. I really feel like the labour was much more intense than it would have been if things had been able to progress naturally. The pushing stage was prolonged, over 2.5 hrs, and then the vacuum was used to assist in my little boy being born. He was a big baby (9lb 8oz), so I supposed that didn't help!

Overall my active labour wasn't super long ~12 hours, but it was just so full on and I felt like I wasn't in control. I'm not left traumatised or anything, but I would just really, really prefer for things to go naturally this time around! Particularly so that I can stay up and moving during labour.

Oh I hear you. I had a horrible time being induced. Part of me longs for it to be natural this time (the labour at least, the drugs I'm having!) just to see if it's any easier. But then I ended up vomitting last time and being put on a drip. They spilled my blood everywhere. My epidural (when they finally gave in and let me have one) didn't work properly so only went down one side. It was just a nightmare. I was hooked up to monitors so I couldn't move off my back (despite it being hell for my SPD). I actually really fear the labour this time.

Thanks so much for all the replies.

Part of my fear is due to the fact that last time (which was my first btw) I ended up asking for an epidural only to find it was too late, I was fully dilated and ready to push.

I'm in a small birthing centre this time (fingers crossed) and I can't have an epidural even if I wanted one.

I hear the drip contractions can be worse than 'normal' ones, so can I worry less about being able to cope do you think??
