Ok, so my dh gets cold sores on his face and ONCE two years ago I had something funky "down there". My doc looked at it and said it looks like he may have transferred it to me through oral (I am so embarrassed right now!). I told my OB about this and he's telling me that I should go on an anti viral drug for the last 4 weeks of pregnancy to ensure I don't get a breakout, so that I can have a vaginal delivery. He said the risk of having a c-section is too great and can be simply avoided by taking this anti viral. After talking to a pharmacists it does sound legitimate, but of course I'm hesitant to take anything while I'm pregnant! Just wondering if anyone else has been in this same boat?

(I posted this on the 3rd tri board too, but thought that this board might have something to offer???)

Hey hun. I am not in this position myself but have a friend who took anti virals, and bubs was perfect and healthy! Did you have the sore swabed? there is also a pcr blood test. I get oral herpes, and am always so careful...as he doesnt get any type (having oral coldsores for more than6mnths gives you a certain amount of protection from ur own strain...antibodies protect ya from transferring it elsewhere after this time span.) Talking about antibodies, bubs should also pick up a bit of protection from you if you have had it a while...and consider bfeeding because it will further protect him/her. I understand you wud be concerned, but medicine is fab these days, and they wud not put you or baby at risk! x x x

I guess I'm more worried about any medication than anything. I don't want to take anything, but at the same time I don't want to risk passing anything on either! It's so complicated.

I have no sores or anything. In fact, I had one questionable sore years ago, and that's why my dr is saying to take the anti virals for the next month, simple as that. He said the risk of an emergency section compared to covering off with an anti viral is much better and safer. Still, with no studies it's hard to trust you know?

the anti -virals are fine during the later stages of pregnancy. and also from 36 weeks the placenta starts to slowly break down and whilst in the breakdown processes only allows nutrients to flow through so even if it did get into the blood stream to the placenta it wouldnt get through the placenta.
it is best to take them if you want a vaginal birth because even if you have the start of a sore you can still pass it onto bubs which is lethal if this does happen and tends to lead to baby dying. sorry to put it so bluntly but it is very hard to tell what the problem is when a baby contracts the herpes virus and normally diagonsis comes too late so for the sake of your baby its either meds or c-section. if you risk vaginal birth without meds you could potentially be putting your babys life at risk. xx

I just think hun, if you had a questionable sore 2years ago it may be worth getting the pcr blood test done...it wont tell you where you have herpes, but hsv1 more common orally...only 10% genitally....hsv 2 more common genitally...10% orally..so it will give you a more clear understanding of whats going on. The only reason i say this is i had a 'questionable' sore that really looked like it was herpes, however it was swabed, and i had bloods and no hsv2 found (i have hsv1 orally, but have antibodies to it, so unlikely to spread it...my partner has it orally to, so wud be dificult to transmit to each other!!) The blood test, and or swab if you get another sore will give you peace of mind...why treat if it wasnt def herpes, and if it comes back it is, well then you are impowered to make an educated decision. If pos you can go ahead with meds safe it the knowledge they are necesary. The gum clinic will do them at a drop in, or if you ask ur ob im sure he/she will do it as they did for me. I completely empathise with ur worries:hugs: x x x

Forgot to say, my sore turned out to just be irritated skin...kinda friction which had turned into a small cyst/blister.....I get trouble with bartholins.
