Hello ladies!
Just a quick question. I had pre eclampsia with my daughter. It was severe and I was hospitalised and induced soon after at 38 weeks. They already told me the the risk of getting it again in a next pregnancy would be high, so I was wondering if anyone is in the same position as me and how are things going? Do you get extra checks?

Thanks ladies!

I had severe PE at 38 weeks with my first ending with an emergency c-section, fluid on my lungs and in ICU for 2 days.
I went on to have a second son 17 months later and boy was i worried, i was put on low dose aspirin throughout the pregnancy and had more regular check ups, i just felt better through the whole pregnancy. Did you notice a difference in your pregnancies?? I had a scheduled c-section at 38 weeks and never developed PE. I also was also advised to increase my calcium intake, so i take a calcium supplement as well.

Im now pregnant with my third and am taking aspirin this time as well

Oh thanks for that. I'm waiting for my first midwife appointment to see what they say.
I had a scan yesterday though and the nurse at the early pregnancy unit said I'd get more check ups.
Fingers crossed all goes well! X

Hi. I had severe pre-eclampsia (bp 200/120's) and was induced at 38.3 weeks. I then developed post-partum HELLP syndrome. I was hospitalized for 11 days after giving birth, and was still in pretty rough shape when I was discharged. I was considered in critical condition. It took about 3 months on meds and a strict diet to get everything back to normal. I never thought I would have another child.
This past December I went and saw a high risk OBGYN specialist for a consultation. He said there are certain things they look for to figure out your risk of getting pre-e (and in my case HELLP) again. Because you were late in your pregnancy when it developed, the risk goes down significantly to under 10%. That is with the assumption that you will be taking a low dose aspirin throughout your pregnancy and closely monitored by your OB.
If you do develop it again, it should be less severe than the first time. I was petrified to even think about getting pregnant again, but after my hour long conversation with him, I feel much better. There still is fear, but I know I am in very capable hands if something does go wrong.
I got my BFP in July and I have seen him twice since. Our first appointment he did a very thorough exam. He checked my bp, urine, pap, and a physical exam for any swelling or pain in my liver area (with HELLP you tend to get epigastric pains from liver failure). He went over in detail what our plan of action is going to be. I am going to have normal check ups until I am 20 weeks, then I will see him every other week, until 30 weeks where I will see him every week. He gave me his cell phone number to call if ANY symptom arises. He told me to have a plan for my daughter in case I have to be hospitalized, as he said he is taking zero chances and will admit me for any change. We went over every possible symptom just as a reminder. He told me to take my BP once a day (not more if BP is okay - doesn't want to cause anxiety).
I am 16 weeks and so far everything is perfect.
The main thing I would say is to get an OBGYN that you trust, and is very familiar with pre-e. My Dr said I was horribly mismanaged by my first OB, and although he cannot say for sure, he doesn't think I would have been so severe if action was taken sooner. (My BP was over 160's over 100's by 36 weeks). Also ask your Dr about baby aspirin.
Another thing he stressed, I mean STRESSED, was ABSOLUTELY NO smoking or being around second hand smoke. Pre-eclampsia wrecks havoc on your blood vessels and cigarette smoke makes it so much worse. Not to scare you but everyone who has ever had pre-eclampsia is at an increased risk of heart disease in our future. Talk to you OB and your family Dr about it. My OB wants me on aspirin not only for pregnancy, but forever.
Wishing you a heathy, happy and pre-e free pregnancy! I'll be stalking this thread to see how you're doing!

I had preeclampsia with my son and I was induced at 37+4, we were both fine with no complications. I was worrying about it happening again, but here I am now with no sign of it and bp has been perfect throughout. No swelling either and I feel great! :D They've been keeping an eye on me very closely though. I was hospitalised at this point with my son, so just try to stay positive ladies, every pregnancy is different :hugs:

Good luck! xx

Wow Torres, I wish things were like that in the UK.
You do not get to choose who looks after you, but then again we do not have to pay.

I go to a hypertention clinic, where I am seen by a 'support nurse', who offers very little in support!

I see a doctor now and again who reports into a consultant but thats it!

I had pre eclampsia and suspected Acute Fatty Liver of Pregnancy which is also very dangerous.

My anxiety is through the roof with this pregnancy, which does not help with bp ect.

Saffy - I'm in Canada, so I don't have to pay either. Can you ask at the hypertension clinic if they would recommend aspirin? I'm not sure how that would work with acute fatty liver though. What were your symptoms of that? What is your pre-e story?

Wow, that sounds awful! I can imagine you're scared of having a second one.
It's good to hear that the chance might be smaller if it developed in later pregnancy.
I've got my booking in appointment with the mw on the 18th. See what she says. I heard about the aspirin thing as well, so see what she says!
Good luck to you too!!

Brilliant and you're nearly there!
Glad to hear everything has gone ok for you so far

Hi had pre-e with my first and c-section at 37 weeks. My liver was going a bit off. Luckily was being managed by a very anal ob. Back to see her for this pregnancy.

On aspirin from 12 weeks to 36 weeks, and having planned c-section at 38.5.

No sign of high Bp or swelling this time, now at almost 34 weeks. Last time my Bp had risen by this point. Really happy with how it's going. I think monitoring helps and knowing what to look for this time.

Best of luck, hope all goes well for all of you ladies.

Thank you so much for that!
I heard I'll be monitored more as well which is reassuring. My bp was ok-ish and went through the roof at 38 weeks. I had no headaches and no swelling, it was just there.
Good luck with your c-section and I'm glad all went well for you.

I am currently on aspirin but no bp medication just yet.

When I was pregnant with my little boy, I went for a bp check up at 35 weeks and it was up a little - around 140/90 (but my booking in bp was 130/88) so i tink that my normal can be a little on the high side.

At 36 week my bp was ?/105 with the midwife so was sent straight to hosp where they found +2 protein. They subsequently ran blood tests and found my liver enzymes were high. I was made to stay in hosp for a week where they found my liver results worsening on a daily basis. they started me on low dose methyldopa as i was still having some mild readings. Stangely o had no swelling and ony ever showed up trace protein in hosp.
They induced me at 37 weeks as my liver was just getting worse. I had a natural birth and my little boy was born very healthy, weighing 5.11lb.

Immediatly after the birth I felt very poorly - dizzy, exhausted and found my bp was through the roof. They moved me to a special room where i think they were preparing to give me magnesium? However labetolol brought my bp down enough. Howver then found it gave me bradycardia and was not given another dose immediatly. Stayed in hosp for a week with very high readings - up to 180/115. Then given labetalol and discharged even tho i still felt terrible and now with a very slow heart beat! I felt like death!

Was told they suspected i had autoammune hepatitus which I googled when i came out of hosp, which is a terrible disease and frightened the life out of me. Went on anti depressants because of my health problems. saw a liver specialist 3 mnths later who said it was not hepatitus, but thought it was AFLP. This is very rare and can be severe and may appear again with another pregnancy. My liver results stayed a little outside normal but my doctor thinks these results are normal for me. Having blood tests regulary to check liver levels and just so frightened that I may have to deliver too early this time. Get some results on Thursday which I am scared about - meaning my bp will also be high because I am panicking! That is my story so far!

I had severe PE with my daughter and she was delivered at 28+6 weighing 1lb 8oz.

I'm currently 35+1 with a baby boy and so far there's no signs of PE this time, I'm being checked every 2 weeks and now weekly for bp and urine.
I'm sceduled for a section at 38+6

They say the earlier u have PE the more likely u r to suffer in next pregnancies so having PE quite late on in preg will reduce ur chances.

I developed pe with my first, bp started creeping about midway, bed rest for the last month and hospitalised at 39 weeks, then induced. Second - not a thing, blood pressure slightly higher than 'typical', but did not go over the borderline. no aspirin or anything given.

I had it with my first, then had 3 pregnancies without it then had it with my 5th xx

I had severe pre e with first pregnancy. Swelling from 15 weeks and high BP from 28 weeks. Pre e went undiagnosed but luckily discovered soon enough, had emergency c section at 34 wks. In having my first OB appt tomorrow so will see what she says about previous pre e. Thanks for the info ladies v helpful x

I had it starting... my guess is around 26wks but diagnosed at 29wks w/ bp @ 150/100 but I don't believe protinuria. Son was born via emergance c-section at 30wks and is perfect now. We took the plunge and are expecting another hoping for a less severe outcome but are aware the same could happen this time as well. The chances of re-occurence are less if pe occured at 37+ weeks. Good luck - and heres to hoping for an uneventful 9months!

I am surprised to hear about the difference in when in your pregnancy pre-e developed and how that would affect future pregnancies. My doctor never told me that, maybe she didn't want to scare me?
This is my first pregnancy in 17 years, but that first one was traumatic! I developed pre-e around 29 weeks with bp of 210 over 120, and kidneys and liver not functioning properly. I had an emergency section under general anasthetic at 31 weeks. Luckily my 2 pound dd was perfect but I was very, very sick. I am terrified it will happen again. The first time I was a teenager so that was a risk factor, now I'm over 35 so that's a risk factor. My doctor doesn't seem too worried about it. I have a regular GP until January, when i will be transferred to an ob. I have been getting crazy headaches lately but I think they are hormonal? Either was I'm flat out scared, I think I was lucky to do as well as I did after last time, and maybe it was only because I was young enough to handle it!

I had PE in labour with my first son and then had it from 34 wks with my second. Had emergency c section at 35wks and baby was on breathing machine. Was a very scary time and it does worry me that i'll get it again. I think i'll be given aspirin this time around. Good luck to all of you, hopefully PE free pregnancies xx

I was told to take baby aspirin throughout pregnancy and will be more closely monitored this time. My OB/Gyn said I can try for natural birth if I want but if there is any sign of complication they will give C section.
