Anyone see a lactation consultant or bf counsellor before birth?

I had a lot of problems feeding my son due to undiagnosed tongue and lip ties. I had to combi feed from 8 weeks due to poor milk transfer and low weight gain. My supply was badly affected despite regular pumping between feeds and taking domperidone and fenugreek.

I kept some breastfeeding up until 8 months but it was hard work.

I want to breastfeed this time again and I'm actually very open to combi feeding at some point as it worked well for us but I would really like to be able to establish my supply early on and be confident in my ability to feed my child, something I never felt with my son until he started formula.

Is it possible to see someone before my daughter is born for some advice? And can I insist that she is checked for ties before we leave the hospital? Is there any provision for providing support for free?

Thank you

Tongue tie can be genetic, so if one baby had it your second might also. I'd talk to your midwife and ask her to find out who at your hospital is qualified to check for tongue tie, and how to have this done ASAP. Some hospitals have qualified midwives but this is rare (don't accept an unqualified person "checking" for tongue tie) so you might need a referral to ENT. I have a friend who after 3 tt babies had the 4th baby checked at day one and it snipped at day 4, so it can be prepared for in advance!

LLL counsellors usually know the quickest referral procedures too and in some areas a LLL counsellor saying tongue tie gets a fast track to ENT for the procedure. LLL and NCT counsellors all visit for free. I had multiple visits from both.

Get it written on to your notes that you want to breastfeed but had a previous TT baby. Sometimes the notes don't all get read but at least it is an extra place to air your concerns.

I also found these groups in your area but you may need to check if they still run https://www.bristol.gov.uk/document...15 5.pdf/1f9ffe4d-2f7b-4355-880c-fba44cafda2c
They are open to pregnant women so you can make a support network before LO arrives.
