Anyone started taking DHA supplements?

I've read quite a few studies on PubMed that say DHA gives the baby a developmental advantage (studies at 3, 6, 12, 18 months and even 5 years), and can also help prevent preterm labour. It's also been said to help fend of postpartum depression too, but study results don't find anything significant here....Anyways, long story short, I've started taking a prenatal DHA/EPA supplement. Anyone else decided to?

Yep! I've taken DHA since the beginning as it is in my prenatal vitamin :).

No supplement here, but the evidence is very convincing as you pointed out. There appear to be differences in some studies between supplemental DHA and diets high in DHA. Ive just been making a conscious effort to beef up my omega 3s like eating eggs, fish, peanuts, cashews, and so on.

Grow those brains babies!

I have... It comes with my prenatal that I started before trying to concieve... This boy better be smart because i'm getting ditzy by the day:)

Yes, I sure do, I don't eat fish so I take these along with my daily prenatal vitamin.

I suffered from post natal depression so they were no help there, but I can vouch for the fact that my little girl seems to be quite intelligent - as noticed by others.

I take Pregnacare plus which has 300mg DHA in it.

This was my struggle in the beginning. Food sources are supposed to be more effective...but I don't trust my appetite enough to ensure I get enough of these things on a regular basis, so supplements it is! All the things we have to think about while growing babies!

I've been doing both... I eat two pasture-raised eggs nearly every day (pastured eggs are much higher in DHA and other nutrients than grocery store eggs) and loads of other DHA/omega-3-rich foods, but I do also take a fish oil supplement as well which has 465mg DHA in it.

I've tried, I bought some specifically as I love the idea of helping my little ones brains out, but I find it really tough! I'm good at remembering to take medication but the ones I have give me the WORST fishy burps and make me feel really sick.

In first tri it was just out of the question, I think I took them twice and they came straight back up. Now if I take them, even though I only have very mild morning sickness maybe once per week, I wake up feeling rough and sick.

I've been eating loads of salmon and peanuts though so fingers crossed that'll help just enough :)

Then you should be ok! It's most important to take it during the third trimester (so I've heard), so as long as your appetite for salmon doesn't change, eating it at least twice a week should do the trick. I take my DHA with dinner, so it gets diluted with food and so far - no fishy burps! lol

I take dha, prenatal, and vitamin D3

According to my tests, my doctor said I didn't get enough vit d.
I realized my prenatal barely has any, only 400 IU.
I need 2000 IU per day.

I always take it, pregnant or not. I'm veggie, so take algae oil DHA. Can definitely recommend it if you don't like the fishy after taste some people say they get after fish oil. X

How much would you need to eat from a dietary source instead of from a supplement, does anyone know?

Yup! I'm a vegetarian so it's harder for me to get natural sources of DHA, so I've been taking an algae-DHA supplement... 400 mg a day.

Yup - I take a prenatal, DHA, Vitamin D3, Iron, and Calcium.

I've been taking fish oil (contains Omega 3, DHA and EHA) since first trimester. I'm still taking that now. For my third tri, my Osteopath (BIL) has given me DHA/EHA supplements in the form of a capsule that have a different balance of the components than my oil does.

He said it will help boost baby's brain development (IQ), reduce the chances of post-partum depression and boost milk production for BFing.

If it does even just one of those things, I'll be happy. :)

I've also noticed that my psoriasis has improved slightly with the fish oil (with added Vitamin D in it)...and that's better than I expected! Since psoriasis is often exaggerated/triggered by stress, I was expecting the hormonal changes and stresses on my body to cause it to flare and worsen.

Oh yeah, and of course, I am taking my prenatal as well.

I take VPure DHA/EHA capsules which is vegetarian and vegan as its taken from the seaweed from which the fish get their DHA etc. I've been taking it since getting PG with my last baby and throughout breast feeding which we're still doing now.
