Hey girls, I didnt know where to post this...I could be in completely the wrong section but Im just after some opinions.
I hope this thread doesnt cause any offence to anyone.

My question is basically,
for those of you that have had a miscarriage in the future, would you compare the pain to contractions?

I suffered a miscarriage last march, and the pain was horrendous, but I found I could cope with it, breathing through the really heavy cramps and rocking myself in bed. I read on the internet whilst I was going through the miscarriage, that miscarriage is compared to labour pains.
Im weighing up my options of pain relief and any answers to this question would definately help in my decision.

If miscarriage pains are comparable to contractions, I will deff be having a water birth, as I found I could cope with it however agonising it was.

Thank you in advance x

I have had 5 miscarriages and 1 vaginal birth without pain relief. As painful as miscarriages are they are no where as intense as labor in my experience. That being said I did get through labor in a bed without pain meds and hope to do it again.

I have to agree with Jinx. Labour is a lot more intense and painful than miscarrying. The best advice I can give is don't expect anything ! You may be fine with an unmedicated delivery, or a water birth or you may decide on any type of intervention. The only goal here is a live, healthy infant and a healthy mother and how that is achieved doesn't matter in the end.

I agree as well. Jusyt been though another Mc and the cramping is similar in its behaviour but not as intense and definatly not as painful. But do not worry, there are lots of things that the midwife can help you with to ease the pain even if you decide to go without medication.

It really depends how far along you are when you miscarry. For my 2nd trimester losses, it felt very much like early labor. A friend who lost her baby at 20 weeks said it was just as painful as giving birth to her children full term. My earlier loss (5.5 wks) felt like a period.

Of course the pain of losing a child is infinitely worse than the pain of childbirth.

When I miscarried at 12 wks the doctor told me the pain is like contractions...I'd never felt a pain like it...with the second mmc the pin was horrendous, even worse than mc'n at 12 wks...but I had other problems with that mmc aswel...

i can let you know in 9 weeks time lol but as has been said the pain of losing a child, of course is far worse than any temporary childbirth pain.xxxxxx

I've had 2 MC's and a natural birth with gas and air,the first MC was horrendous, and was actually (i think) on the same level as labour.

However, looking back, I dont think it was, but the psychological factors ( I was alone at the time, no baby to look forward too, waiting for the actuall loss to come etc) made the pain far more unbearable. Whereas labour, I'd read about it, was prepared for it, couldnt wait!!! plus, the G&A was available when i needed it!

Nowhere near as bad. My early miscarriage was painful but not terribly so. Isabella was a second trimester loss and I laboured for 5 hours before she was born but it was nowhere near as physically bad as a full term labour (Mentally miscarriages are worse because you have to cope with the emotions too).

I had a mc at 11 weeks & the contractions lasted 6 hours - intensified gradually & the last 30 mins were unbearable - I could no longer manage the pain as it was like being in established labour. My partner called Doctors-on-Call, who advised us to call an ambulance, which arrived just in time, as I was desperate for gas 'n' air.

When I was in labour with my son, I was put on a drug to make you dilate, which caused extremely strong contractions - they took my breath away, literally. Had pethedine & gas 'n' air.

Only 'passed' one mc naturally (bar left over tissue) it was around 12 weeks I guess, it was horrendous...the pain was awful! Also had a pretty rough birth with my son, but in some ways the mc was worse...I remember those 'contractions' being worse...but then I coped with them, not sure whether it was more what was happening that was more distressing...when you're in labour you have a baby to look forward to, when your mcing...you know the pain signals the end of something..iykwim?!

Sorry can't really help...every labour will be different! x

None of my mcs were as painful as labour (and I didn't actually end up giving birth naturally due to fetal distress). Actually, my endometriosis cramps were more on par with labour.

I have had 2 losses and neither have been in comparison to childbirth... labour is much more intense and lasts a lot longer. Try not to worry though you will get through it... you will have a baby to look forward to at the end.
