this may seem a little premature as my younger daughter is only 13 months but i just keep turning the idea of home education over in my mind. my elder daughter went v successfully through the state education system and is starting college next week but i would like to explore other ideas. my personal circumstances have changed and it would be possible this time around. i have to say DH isn't that keen and i don't know whether he would ever change his mind. obviously i wouldn't be able to go ahead if he wasn't on board. i am a qualified teacher and taught for 10 years before my youngest came along. just wondered if anyone else is considering / doing home ed?

yes, we have considered this, my OH is 12 years older than me so has 2 older children from a previous marriage. His eldest son is now 17 and going to college, but he was always the class clown and flunked school from day 1 in infant school as he was too busy showing off and didn't bother to learn. OH recons that if he'd have home taught him, he would have been a lot more focused, hes not a stupid boy by a long shot, hes just highly influenced by others.
His other son is 7 and hes the complete opposite and seems to be thriving in state education, hes conforming so far and is ahead in some subjects so home teaching him would be to no benefit.
Our son, Noah is 18 months and we have both said that if the local primary schools don't meet up to our high expectations and we can't afford private education, then we will seriously consider home schooling even if we have to sacrifice things to do that for him. Snobish maybe, but i think when it comes down the education, that people deserve the best chance in life if they are willing to learn.

Yes, we're planning to. I'm a teacher too, but I plan to do autonomous education with Alice and any other children we might have. I am thoroughly disillusioned with the education system!

I was home educated for 4 years and we are planning to home educate our children. Hubby wasn't keen initially but he has agreed to try it until Aaron is 6 or 7, and if it doesn't work out we can still send him to school as we think that is a better age to start anyway. He's getting much keener on the idea now though. People keep asking me when I'm going to send Aaron to nursery, so next week I am starting a few hours per week of loosely-structured play-based learning at home.

that's a good idea - having a trial until 6 or 7. maybe my DH would go for that? i also agree that 6 or 7 is a much better age for school entry than 4. as my daughter is an august birthday she will barely be 4 years old when she is supposed to start school. apparently you can hold them back for a year as they don't legally have to start school until 5 so summer babies can get an extra year at home. if we do send her to school i would seriously consider doing this.
