Hi ladies,

Just wondering if anyone on here from the uk has any experiences of giving birth at Princess Royal in Farnborough/Orpington.
I've been booked in to this hospital and just looking for some stories

Hi.

I'm booked into the pruh but I've not had the baby yet.

I have spent a couple of days there after I had a bleed though. I was seen in triage, spent most of a day on delivery suite then transferred to maternity Ward. I have to say I was really impressed with the standard of care I received and all the midwives and doctors were really nice.
I had lost my mother two weeks previously and got quite upset in the night and the midwives were just lovely.

I've also heard very good things about the birth centre, if you're eligible to birth there.

I had my first at Lewisham and so far I much prefer Pruh!

If you're at all interested I am also a member if Bromley Maternity Services Liason Committee, which acts as a kind if feedback group on bayous maternity issues. The groupis made up of midwives, service users, other healthcare professionals and others working in related services. We meet every 2 months. There's details at the bottom of this page

I haven't personally as I had a home birth but I've several friends who have and have only heard good things.

Hi

I've given birth twice there (well, I guess it's officially 3 times as the second was twins)

Both times it was extremely busy - they must have been full moons or something. They were really attentive during the births, and really nice afterwards. However, you could see how busy they were on the wards afterwards so they only really checked on you when they needed to or when you called the buzzer

The first time I wanted to give birth on the oasis suite (midwife led) but I couldn't due to bring 37+2 and only measuring 33 weeks when I went into labour. However, I stayed on the ward there afterwards as the main ward was full. The oasis suite is on the same corridor as the delivery suite and special care baby unit and the delivery rooms are really nice - they're set up as a home from home. There's also a lovely lounge for visitors afterwards and they're not as strict on visitor times as the ward. I would really recommend you go there if you're low risk and happy to not have the option of an epidural.

My second birth was quite different than my first - we were mini celebrities as it's realitivly unusual to see twins born naturally. As I mentioned, both births were on the delivery suite but I didn't actually see a doctor with the first birth as it was low risk so the midwives did everything. With my second it was high risk as I was having twins and went into labour at 34+6 so I actually gave birth in the theatre so they were ready in case of complications with twin 2. I had loads of attention and was never left alone during either labour

One of the babies had to got to special care baby unit for 24 hours and I must say that they were absolutely fabulous. I've never meet nicer nurses and nothing was too much trouble. Hopefully you won't need to worry about that though

One thing that I highly recommend is to have a student midwife if possible. I had one with each birth and they were absolutely fantastic. Holding my hand, reminding me to breathe, fetching me water etc, even offering a massage! Basically all the things your hubby should do but he can't remember or panics or you don't want him near you!

Feel free to pm me with any questions x

Yes both my boys were delivered there. First time I started in Oasis and moved along the corridor eventually delivering in theatre. My second was a quickish delivery in the Oasis centre. Both times I've had an overnight stay. Personally I had amazing midwives both times. I wasn't too keen on the Obs doctor the first time, but every other member of staff was wonderful. Assuming you're low risk, I cannot praise the Oasis suite more highly. I'm not a doctor person anyway, so for me I wasn't comfortable on delivery suite. I.guess because they are busier there is a less personal touch. That said it was very busy and labour ward was closed for new admissions by the time I was transferred over (Bank holiday weekend and I know they had a lot of planned inductions), so I may have been experiencing it at is worse. I was more comfortable in a quieter, more secluded environment. Is there anything specific you want to know?

Can i ask
You about Oasis?
Do you get to stay in the same room you give birth?

No. There is a postnatal ward with 4 beds in the Oasis wing. Assuming there isn't a lady waiting for the pool you aren't rushed out. I probably spent 3 hrs in the room post delivery. My mum came and saw the baby. I had my stitches, showered, dressed and photos. In theory I guess I could have been discharged from the room but we needed a cardiologist to check our baby so we needed to wait until the morning. The postnatal ward has no visitor hours and your partner can stay. You just have to be considerate of the other patients and not be too loud. Siblings can visit but no other children.

Great! Thanks for the details reply! I am actually looking forward to that!

My pleasure! It really is fantastic and all of the Oasis team were great. My youngest was that baby who cried all night long and wouldn't settle (he took until the morning to feed and after that was okay). A mw could see I was exhausted and held him for me so I could get a little sleep. Angel!
