Hi,

I am currently expecting my 2nd baby. With my son I tried to bf for a week but it just didn't work for me as I was extremely aneamic after birth and my milk never came in, consequently my son was crying to be fed every 15 minutes. It was quite a distressing time for me as I didn't feel I had midwifes support and was made to feel guilty about it. I have thought long and hard about it and have decided that I would like to try bf again with my new baby but I am very nervous about it. I found bfing very painful the first time and my nipples bled and were really sore. I am scared that I will fail again. I guess what I want to know is, did anyone struggle with their first baby but have success with baby no2?

I would love to read some success stories!!!

I've just had a lady request to be a champion who managed to successfully bf her 2nd after failing with the first. I'll pm you both so you can chat away to each other :flower:

I combi fed my daughter for 3 weeks before giving up bf completely. It was still hard with my son, but with the assistance of a good ibclc we found out he had a tongue tie and dealt with problems early. I think between that and utter determination I made it through the second time around. My son is about to turn a year old and I'm still nursing. I did start supplementing at 9 months because of af supply issues, but he still feeds direct at least twice a day. He was ebf for the first 9 months. I never ever dreamed we'd have that kind of success after the way it went with my first! You can do it!!

I bf my first for 2.5 weeks before moving to expressing as my nipples were just torn to shreds and I was in agony. I got mastitis twice and would cry at every feed. I expressed for a week or two but then moved to formula, which I was so gutted about.

I spent ages getting help with latch etc but nothing seemed to help.

This time around has been a totally different experience! My little man is only 6 days old but breastfeeding is going so well. I have no pain whatsoever and he is gaining weight already.

I'd recommend using any local breastfeeding resources that you can. We have a breastfeeding midwife available and I got her out to us on day 3 and although things were going well by then, she gave loads of useful advice.

Good luck! X

i didn't manage to breastfeed my first past a month (most was spent expressing). she couldn't latch on.

my 2nd is 19 months, she breastfed within minutes of being born & it's been smooth-going for us! we're still going strong!

i was told by the lactation consultant i spoke to before she was born to remember that all babies are different & that the experience could be completely different. i didn't believe her, i was convinced it was my fault i couldn't breastfeed bella. she was absolutely right :)

xx
