has any mums out there breastfed with flat or inverted nipples? was just looking for some advice and wondered if it made it more difficult to breastfeed or if it sorted itself out fairly easily?

i got sent a niplette by avent (perks of the job) but i just found out you cant use it after 6 months and im 22 weeks already :/ also when i try and use it i suck all the air out (which is quite painful) but when i disconnect it the end bit pops off.

for those who haven't seen these:

i have inverted once and never managed to breastfeed my son i tried niplettes didnt work. this time round my G.P told me 3 times a day for about 10/20 minutes to role them so that they come out i have been doing this for about 12 weeks now and my nipples now come out on there own or as soon as i tweek them. it is possible just a little harder x

One of mine is flat the other pops a little out and my doctor said it might just mean more work, I really wanna BF so I hope LO can help by that strong little sucking power.

My Dr, told me when I was pregnant with 1st to have my husband suck on my nipples to get them outvert more lol. It was uncomfortable but oh well.My husband didnt mind. But you would probably have to everyday for a couple minutesunless you get contractions.
Now from all of the nursing and pumping I have done with my kids they just automatically poke out!

I had super flat nipples before my first born. It was hard for him to latch. I used a pump and eventually a thin silicone nipple protector to help him latch. THAT was the key. Now, after two babies and nursing for 17months each, they are perkier than ever! ;)

A friend of mine had inverted nipples too. She had a hard time nursing but the lactation consultant told her that if they would have known prior to the birth they could have techniques to reverse it. Not sure what exactly. Can you talk to a lacatation consultant?

I am a small girl in the chest department. :winkwink: When I had my son, he would not latch at all. I tried and tried. I remember the nurses in the hospital forcing him on me and not realizing that he had nothing to grasp onto. I had previously read about nipple shields and I called my husband immediately and asked him to pick one up for me. (quite funny picturing him shopping for it as they are sold by the size of your nipple and there are quite a few to choose from :laugh2: )
I used it for the entire time while breastfeeding (about 7 months). We tried a few times without it, but he wanted nothing of it.

My daughter was born 8 weeks early and when she was in the special care nursery, they gave me a shield right away. Preemies already have a hard time latching and they recommend mom's try it (especially for preemies) so that it helps them latch easier. Once my daughter was about 2 months old, she latched perfectly without it and nursed for another 7 months with no help.

I would research your options before hand. With this little one, I will definitely be picking up a shield before him/her arrives. I wont be taking the chance of not being able to feed them in those first few minutes because of small/flat/inverted... whatever they are.
Hope this helps!
