Just doing a bit of research for Sharleen my beautiful wife who just so happens to have an under active thyroid (Hypothyroidism).

Now, on any normal day (not pregnant) she could sleep for England!. She has a resistance to Thyroxin (prescribed drug) & even though she also takes Liothyronine to help the thyroxin be absorbed she still suffers a lot with feeling cold irrespective of the actual temperature, feeling tired, slow metabolism etc etc. Quite frankly, the treatment she has received from the NHS has been shocking, her first consultant actually told her to ignore it as he felt she was just being neurotic!!! Anyway that's another story for another day.

Anyway, I'll cut to the chase, anyone else here have an under active thyroid & if so how well are you coping with the added tiredness etc

Thanks x

I do! My thyroid levels were stable for years before I got pregnant. My doctor checked my levels when I was 12 weeks and they were really out of whack. Ever since then, he adjusts my medicine and then I get rechecked every 6 weeks. They are starting to normalize, but still not where he wants them to be during pregnancy.

I was soooooo tired till around 15/16 weeks. I guess a combo of typical tiredness that comes with pregnancy + tiredness due to my thyroid levels being out of whack.

My advice is just to stay on top of your levels and make sure you are getting them checked regularly! Hopefully since she's 13 weeks, some of the tiredness will start to wear off soon :)

I've been treated for hypothyroidism for 3 years now. I was borderline but symptomatic at that time so I made the decision to start levothyroxine which helped enormously. Had bloods done at about 8 weeks and all was fine. I was completely exhausted for the first 12 - 14 weeks but I think that was due to pregnancy itself rather than my thyroid after comparing myself to other people. Had some bloods done last week at 21 weeks so will hopefully get the results at my midwife appointment this week. Had my 20 week scan thinking that would be the last one before baby arrives but I'm getting a growth scan at 28 weeks due to my hypothyroidism. Not that this is a bad thing - nice to see baby again!

I have under active and am on 150mg of eltroxin a day. My god the tiredness killed me the first 3 months I was nearly having 2naps a day! Not so bad now but general pregnancy tiredness is catching up on me now! On a plus my nails are so strong now because the thyroid makes them so weak :(

P.S. You're a wonderful hubby doing that research for your wife. I bought hubby a book for expectant fathers months ago and he's not opened it yet! Not that I'm surprised - he has come to my scans etc. but think he feels a bit out of it as I'm the one who feels baby move etc. He enjoys it when other men speak to him about being a dad but none of his mates have kids. Carry on with that interest - she'll certainly appreciate it. Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy.

Thank you all so much for the feed back.

Very much appreciated x
