Are flat lollipops safe?

For a 2.5 year old if supervised? Not those big ball shaped lollipops, but the flat ones like this pic

Looking for something for my LO to suck on the plane for take off and landing but I can't find any info about safety. I wouldn't give her one of those big, round ones.

Any other ideas for something to help her ears on the plane?

Probably ok? Not sure ... I personally wouldn't but that's because I'm a bit paranoid about choking.

You could give her a smoothie in a straw cup to suck on, I recently did this.

Once you've taken off, look at her and yawn and hopefully the natural reflex to yawn will kick in so her ears will pop back.

Will she tolerate these? My LO wouldn't ...

I would give my 2.5 yr old a lollipop like that with supervision but I realise that not everybody would and I think it would depend on the child. Having said that, when we last flew my two were 3 and 1 and we gave them cup drinks with a straw as suggested above and that seemed to help although they were so excited with being on plane they barely even noticed their ears popping :)

Probably safe with close supervision.

I always give Maria a little carton of juice with a straw for take-off and landing on the plane. I also give her xylitol pastilles to suck if she has enough of the juice before the pressure change eases up. Stick of liquorice to suck works too.

I used gum for Sheldon at 2.5. He had had it before that though so it's all about what you're comfortable with. I would try the lollipop, but if you're not comfortable with it even just eating snacks can help pop the ears.

I like the yawning reflex idea, I'll have to try that next time!

We've just given out lg a drink and she's been fine. I personally wouldn't go down the lolly route for fear of choking and teeth issues but I guess under supervision, it would be safe enough

I tried yawning on our last flight since I didn't have anything with me to help, it didn't work! Will check out some ear plugs, thanks felix :)

I'm not really into giving her sugar on a stick usually but it's eight take offs/landings and 40 hours travelling - just feel like I need something to make it easier for us both as I'll be on my own with her as well.

Just so you know, the yawn idea is good, but unlikely to work. Yawns generally don't become 'contagious' until kids are aged 5 and up. Seriously! Yawn in your LO's face and watch as they do nothing. :)

Here's one link to a story about it: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ne...-children-are-immune-from-catching-yawns.html

I think giving a drink or snack would be sufficient.

Interesting!

Interesting! The nurse gave me that trick and I actually forgot to do it last time we tavelled. I didn't think about it again until I saw this thread.

Going to have to try it today! :haha:

Off topic but my toddler group done a pass the parcel for Halloween and inside each wrapper was a regular round boiled lollipop! The kids were all about 18-28 months. :/ No one batted an eyelid....

Lots of people don't seem to know/care about common choking hazards :/

Zephram - you're not in Wellington, are you?

Ohh! Fancy a BnB playdate some time in December? Just if that's not too weird.. haha. PM me if you like :)

I gave dd a little box of raisins or some jelly beans or soft jelly sweets for take off and landing, and a drink. Mostly it didn't actually bother her, she even slept through a couple!! :). Ps. Jealous girls, my family are in Wellington and I'm here in Ireland for Xmas and the foreseeable future!!

Aww Tess :hugs: It's hard being so far from home! Maybe you'll just have to have an NZ christmas in Ireland, get the BBQ out and head to the beach :haha:
